Fiber Optic-to-Serial Converter offers redundancy feature.

Press Release Summary:

Model ADAM-4542+ converts single-mode fiber optic signals to RS-232/422/485 serial signals. Aimed at long-distance communication applications such as intelligent transportation systems, it offers transmissions up to 15 km and wavelengths at 1,310 nm. By providing fault detection on main connection between 2 modules, communication can be automatically and seamlessly switched to secondary connection.

Fiber Optic to Serial Converter Released by Advantech

Cincinnati, Ohio (August 4, 2004) - Advantech Corporation, Industrial Automation Group presents the ADAM-4542+, a fiber optic to serial converter. Aimed at industrial long-distance communication applications such as intelligent transportation systems, the new ADAM-4542+ converts single-mode fiber optic signals to RS-232/422/485 serial signals. A newly invented redundancy feature also promises improved reliability. The ADAM-4542+ improves over its predecessor (ADAM-4542) by adding a unique redundancy feature that has just been invented by Advantech. By providing fault detection on the main connection between two modules, communication can be automatically and seamlessly switched to a secondary connection. This improves reliability and can prevent costly troubleshooting on critical long-distance communication applications that are commonly used with fiber optics. Cut one wire, and another automatically takes over.

Fiber optic communication is perfect for applications where the transmission medium must be protected from electrical exposure, lightning, atmospheric conditions or chemical corrosion. Fiber optic networks operate at high speeds and have a large carrying capacity. Signals can be transmitted further without needing to be boosted, and fiber optic cables also cost much less to maintain. Fiber optic communication is also ideal for communications that need to be secure - it is very difficult to tap into fiber optic transmission lines. .

To compliment the existing ADAM-4541 converter which uses multi-mode fiber for transmissions up to 2.5 km, and wavelengths at 820 nm, the new ADAM-4542+ uses single-mode for transmissions up to 15 km, and wavelengths at 1310 nm. Connect ADAM-4542+ to your central control room using serial communication, and you have a radius of 15 km to expand your control system.

The ADAM-4542+ is in stock now and available for sale at Advantech Corporation, Industrial Automation Group. For more information, visit advantech.com/eautomation or call 877-294-8989.
