Express Cube 150 Desk-Top Dimensioning System: A Response to Today's Introduction of Shape-Based Pricing by the US Postal Service

May 17, 2007 - The Unites States Postal Service put into effect this week a new Shape-Based Pricing system based on package shape as well as weight. Packages that do not have the correct postage will either be returned or the extra charge passed on to the recipient. This could create ruinous customer service problems.

Shape-Based Pricing is a variation of dimensional weight calculation that resulted in new challenges for package shippers when it was introduced in January, 2007 by UPS and other major couriers. The change to Shaped-Based Pricing will cause bigger disruptions especially for irregular package mailers.

Mailers will now need to be conscious of the size, thickness, and weight of their mail pieces under the new structure. Small volume mailers will need to manually measure the size and thickness of their packages to ensure proper postage is applied. Mid- to high-volume mailers will need to automate to mail stream efficiently flowing. The new pricing system is particularly onerous for mailers of large, lightweight packages using the US Postal Service. These changes will be difficult for untrained staff and for companies that have high turnover.

"The assumption is that companies will move to standardized packaging. However, our experience in the courier business for over 30 years, has shown us that this transition is unlikely, especially for odd sized, light items that require large boxes for protection," said Lorne Hull, Director of Marketing, ExpressCube. "Our ExpressCube 150 countertop cubing system will be a real answer for easily calculating the correct mailing costs of these items."

The ExpressCube 150 has been designed to handle POS and mail room applications. US Postal studies have shown that the ExpressCube 150 will dimension and weigh over 99.5 % of incoming parcels making us a leader in Shape-Based Pricing technology solutions. Our clients are happy to hear, the device has been designed to fit on a 24" deep counter.

We will be at the D/C Expo, booth 612, May 22 - 25, Navy Pier Chicago.
