Exar Introduces Industry's First 1.8 Volt Single-Channel UART in 24 and 32- QFN Packages

FREMONT, Calif., Dec. 6 -- Exar Corporation (NASDAQ:EXAR), a leading provider of high-performance, mixed-signal silicon solutions for the worldwide communications infrastructure, announced today the industry's lowest voltage single-channel UART. At 1.8V, in 32-QFN (5mm x 5mm) and 24-QFN (4mm x 4mm) packages, the multi-purpose XR16L570 is ideal for a variety of battery operated portable consumer products including mobile devices, smart phones, gaming systems, and PDAs, amongst others. Added to the industry's smallest UART (XR16L580) announced in June 2005, and the industry's first 66MHz UART (XR17V258) announced in March 2005, this device marks Exar's third industry-first offering in 2005 and reaffirms Exar's commitment to supplying industrial, telecommunications and consumer markets with enabling UART serial interface solutions.

"The XR16L570 is the first of a new generation of low voltage UART product families from Exar," said Levent Ozcolak, divisional vice president and general manager, Interface Products Division. "As consumer demand for more full featured handheld electronics continues to grow, Exar is providing the advanced technology solution that enables the design of applications with the optimal balance of power, size and performance at the lowest possible cost."

Product Details
The XR16L570 is a 1.8V to 5V device with 5V tolerant inputs. The device features 16-byte Transmit (TX) and Receive (RX) FIFOs with selectable trigger levels, automatic software and hardware flow control, and infrared (IrDA 1.0) encoder/decoder. The PowerSave mode of the device further reduces the power consumption during sleep mode to less than 5uA at 1.8V over the industrial temperature range (-40 degrees C to +85 degrees C.). It also has the industry standard 16C550 register set along with enhanced features that support Intel's 8-bit data bus interface. The XR16L570 internal registers are compatible with the XR16L580 product.

"Designers and consumers both can benefit from the XR16L570's low voltage and small package options," said Eric Nguyen, senior strategic marketing manager, Interface Products Division. "Consumer portable devices leveraging leading application such as Bluetooth and global positioning capabilities will see immediate extended battery life and portability benefits from the XR16L570's low voltage and small form factor advantages. At the same time the manufacturers will have more flexibility in selecting the appropriate device without the need for stockpiling different supply voltage UARTs or the need for making tradeoff between feature integration and the product's battery life."

Tools and Support
The XR16L570 is supported by Exar's market proven UART software drivers for popular real-time operating systems, such as Windows CE and VxWorks. With the availability of software drivers and Exar's application support line, UART customers can accelerate their time-to-market by eliminating driver development, testing and diagnostic procedures.

Packages and Availability
The XR16L570 is available now in 24-pin and 32-pin QFN packages at $1.64 for 1,000 pieces. The device operates over the industrial temperature range of -40 degrees C to +85 degrees C.
