Exalead Enhances One:Search Platform with Addition of Vertical Search Capability

Wikipedia Application First to Take Advantage of Exalead's Patented Search by Serendipity Navigation Technology

BOSTON, Mass., April 23 -- Exalead®, a global provider of search software for business and the Web, today announced the addition of a new Wikipedia® search application to its exalead one:search(TM) platform, the technology foundation for Exalead's product portfolio -- from the desktop to the enterprise and the Web.

Wikipedia has become a popular Web destination for a wide range of information. Now users of Exalead's Web search engine (http://www.exalead.com/) can search, browse and navigate the Wikipedia database (http://www.wikipedia.org/) with greater ease and satisfaction than ever before by making use of the company's new vertical search capability that has been added to the exalead one:search technology platform. The Wikipedia search application, the first in a series of vertical search functions from Exalead, can be launched by clicking a Wikipedia tab on the Exalead search engine's home page.

The currently available application was disclosed by Francois Bourdoncle, Exalead's co-founder, president and chief executive officer, during a speech he gave at the 2007 Search Engine Meeting, held here today.

In his talk, Bourdoncle offered a technical perspective on the latest technologies to facilitate effective human-machine interaction that permit a more natural search experience. He also offered insight into the redesigning of the Exalead search engine to better allow people to dynamically interact with the search engine. The Wikipedia search application was just one of the enhancements.

"Exalead is committed to continuously delivering innovations that make search easier," Bourdoncle said. "Exalead believes that people should have the same experience whether they search on their business' network or on the Web. The new Wikipedia search application added to our exalead one:search platform is a tangible output of this goal and demonstrates the power and scalability of Exalead's platform."

Search by Serendipity® Navigation Goes Vertical

The new Wikipedia search feature signals an evolution of Exalead's patented Search by Serendipity navigation technology which allows a search to be broadened or narrowed in just a few clicks.

"By employing Search by Serendipity navigation to vertical search, people looking through a database like Wikipedia from exalead.com are able to move from one topic of interest to another, from one concept to the next quickly and easily," Bourdoncle said. "Wikipedia is called 'The Free Encyclopedia' on the Web. Exalead's new Wikipedia search application makes thumbing through that information resource quicker and more satisfying."

The exalead one:search platform has always leveraged entity extraction to automatically return a list of related topics and categories based on the original search query. Now, with the integration of topic maps, all related terms and categories will be presented in the form of a tag cloud. Users can then click on a word in the cloud to refine the query.
