Micrel Rolls Out Four New IC Solutions for Embedded and Industrial Ethernet Applications

New ICs Give Customers One-Stop Shopping for All Single Port Controllers, Dual Port Switches, Repeaters and Media Converter Needs

SAN JOSE, Calif., Oct. 3 / -- Micrel, Inc. (NASDAQ:MCRL), an industry leader in analog, high bandwidth communications and Ethernet IC solutions, today announced that it has rolled out four new Ethernet IC solutions. The KSZ884x series is part of the 2-port and 3-port Switch/Repeater family launched in June and July of 2005 and round out the Company's Embedded Ethernet offerings. Micrel's new KSZ8842-PMQL, KZS8841-PMQL, KSZ8841-16MQL and the KSZ8841-32MQL are all aimed at the embedded and industrial Ethernet markets. The new ICs are currently sampling, with volume quantities available in the fourth quarter of 2005. The chips are offered in standard and RoHS compliant versions. For specific pricing, please contact your local Micrel sales representative.

By choosing an off-chip Switch or Repeater IC solution, engineers now can free up processors or FPGAs to perform tasks other than managing Ethernet Packets. Designers also have the capability to replace two single port controllers connected to a processor or two single-port controllers and FPGA connected to a processor with a single 2-port switch. In addition, pin-to-pin compatibility across devices allows customers to layout their boards for dual-port applications while servicing current single-port needs. Next generation applications can then use the same board and the dual port devices, thereby saving both time and money.

The KSZ8842-PMQL is a 2-port Ethernet Switch/Repeater featuring a third port, 32-bit/33MHz PCI v2.2 Host Processor interface. The KZS8841-PMQL, KSZ8841-16MQL and the KSZ8841-32MQL are single-port MAC plus PHY controllers with 32 bit/33MHz PCI Host Interface, 8 or 16 bit generic Host Bus Interface or 32-bit generic Host Interface, respectively. Micrel's new ICs offer another industry first, providing any processor or FPGA with an 8, 16, or 32-bit generic bus or 32-bit PCI bus with Switch or Repeater capability. The Dual port devices are ideally suited for VoIP Phones and ATA applications, offering four priority queues per port and special filtering capabilities to reduce traffic congestion. This ensures superior voice quality -- a key requirement in this explosive market.

The dual port devices have the lowest port-to-port latency in the Industry, making each device ideal for daisy-chaining applications such as Video Phones or Industrial or ATE Equipment. The solutions also feature Micrel's patented mixed signal PHY capability resulting in extremely low power consumption across the product family. The KSZ8842M generic bus and switch parts are pin-to-pin compatible with the KSZ8841M Ethernet Controller parts, while the KSZ8842-PMQL switch and PCI bus is pin-to-pin compatible with the KSZ8841-PMQL Ethernet Controller allowing parts to be interchangeable, depending upon a customer's applications and requirements.

All devices feature LinkMD(TM), a cable diagnostic package that enables diagnosis of common cabling problems. Rapid diagnosis of cabling conditions, including distance to fault information, results in reduced customer calls (truck rolls or product returns) and IT service requests. The ICs also offer HP Auto-MDIX, a robust solution for automatic detection and correction for straight-through or crossover cables.

"Since Ethernet is such an easy to use and widely used networking solution, it makes sense for the technology to expand well beyond the SOHO networking and Enterprise spaces," noted Grahame Cooney, Director, Micrel Ethernet group. "Today, Ethernet is expanding into industrial applications on the factory floor and into other areas of the home to connect IP set-top boxes, TVs, multimedia hubs, ATAs and even refrigerators. This trend will accelerate and, with Residential Ethernet becoming a reality in the not too distant future, it will create a demand for millions of new Ethernet ports. Micrel's latest chip offerings allow us to meet our customers' needs for current and emerging Ethernet applications."
