California Micro Devices Expands ESD Protection Portfolio for Emerging Mobile Handset Applications

New Products are Optimized for ESD Protection, Signal Integrity and Compact Form Factor

MILPITAS, Calif., Dec. 3 -- California Micro Devices (NASDAQ:CAMD) today announced an expansion of its product portfolio for mobile handsets with the introduction of two new ESD (electrostatic discharge) protection product families that address the needs of high speed data interfaces found in many of today's most advanced handsets. These products deliver robust ESD protection with superior signal integrity in space saving, low profile packages. The CM1263 family is based on CMD's highly successful PicoGuard(TM) line of low capacitance ESD protection products and provides both robust ESD protection and superior signal integrity for the high speed serial data interfaces that are increasingly being used for display, imager and data ports. The CM1248 family is based on CMD's Centurion(TM) process technology and provides high levels of ESD protection and superior signal integrity for high speed data interfaces to memory and media cards. Products from both families are offered in compact, state of the art packages that minimize board space requirements.

Increased Need for ESD Protection

Today's most advanced handset designs typically feature high resolution color displays and imagers, high speed external data ports and removable memory and media cards. To address these requirements, handset designers increasingly employ new high speed serial interface standards including Mobile Display Digital Interface (MDDI), Mobile Industry Processor Interface (MIPI), Mobile Pixel Link (MPL) and USB 2.0 to achieve high bandwidth, lower power, reduced electromagnetic interference (EMI) and smaller form factors for interface cables and connectors. The system chips that enable these features are fabricated using advanced wafer fabrication processes that are increasingly susceptible to damage from ESD strikes. Additionally, these interfaces operate at data rates up to 500Mbps and cannot tolerate the high levels of capacitance associated with traditional ESD protection solutions due to signal integrity requirements. CMD's new products have been specifically designed to address the ESD protection requirements for these applications while maintaining a high level of integrity.

PicoGuard CM1263 Family

The new CM1263 family of products features 0.85 pF input capacitance and protects against ESD strikes of up to +/-8kV contact discharge per the IEC61000-4-2 level 4 standard. The low capacitance of these devices makes them ideal for protecting emerging interfaces such as MDDI, MIPI, and MPL that connect the main modules (baseband, application processor, display, and camera) in a wireless handset while preserving signal integrity. The CM1263 family offers designers layout flexibility with both two and six channel configurations. The two channel CM1263-02SE is offered in a small form factor SOT-563 package. The six channel CM1263-06DE is offered in a state-of-the art 0.4mm pitch uDFN package.

Centurion CM1248 Family

The CM1248 family of devices, designed with CMD's Centurion process technology, is ideal for protecting user accessible media cards, user interface keys and keypad assemblies which require high levels of ESD protection and signal integrity, but are less sensitive to capacitance. They feature robust ESD protection up to +/-18kV contact discharge per the IEC61000-4-2 level 4 standard, with an input capacitance of 10pF to preserve signal integrity. Offered in multiple channel configurations with compact packages that occupy 50 percent less board space than competitive offerings, the CM1248 arrays provide a very compelling solution.
