BT Launches 'Work Anywhere' Portfolio of Enterprise Mobility Services in North America

Enterprise employees need to be productive from any location, at any time in today's global business environment

EL SEGUNDO, Calif., Sept. 17 -- BT today announced a holistic suite of mobility solutions and professional services designed to help transform enterprises into flexible, mobile business environments in which employees are fully equipped with the tools needed to work securely and effectively from anywhere, at any time, regardless of the device and network being used.

As enterprises globalize, it is becoming imperative that they become more agile in managing people, IT assets and complex communications across time zones and geographies. And with millions of productive working hours and associated costs lost each year due to employee commuting, traveling, inadequate technology and business processes, it's becoming critical for organizations to empower their workforces to be productive and contactable wherever they are working.

According to a Yankee Group survey published last November, "enterprise workforces are becoming increasingly location independent." The Yankee Group Anywhere Enterprise--Large: 2007 European Fixed-Mobile Convergence Survey indicates that "on average 36% of employees spend a day or more away from their primary workspace." (1) By 2011, 46.6 million corporate employees will spend at least one day a week teleworking globally, and an additional 112 million will work from home at least one day a month. The majority of these will be from the United States. (2) The US Federal Government is also increasingly encouraging flexible working practices through legislation such as the Working Family Flexibility Act. (3)

BT's mobility capabilities have enabled approximately 70,000 of its own employees (70% of its global workforce) to work flexibly from anywhere. Through flexible working, BT has enabled over 90% of its female workforce to return to work after maternity leave, compared with the average of 47% for most companies.

To meet the requirements of its customers, BT offers "Work Anywhere" - a consultancy-based approach combined with an integrated global enterprise mobility portfolio addressing property, people and process needs.

"For enterprises to remain agile and sustainable, it is essential that their employees are able to be productive from any location," said Michael Boustridge, President, BT Americas. "Flexible working not only positively impacts employee productivity but improves cost management through facilities consolidation. It's a highly valuable asset in attracting and retaining skilled employees, and results in higher employee job satisfaction and lower absenteeism. We've found that flexible working benefits both employer and employee." (4)

BT's Global Enterprise Mobility Portfolio includes:
-- Work Anywhere Quick Start - This concept is the core of the consultancy and professional services that is provided within the Work Anywhere proposition and provides the strategic and tactical guidance for all other work that follows.

(4) According to BT's research, the benefits of flexible working include:
-- Increased productivity - Productivity gains of 20-60% have been measured.
-- Reduced office costs - In the past six years BT has saved $1.5 billion annually on real estate costs. Within the past ten years we have saved over $9 billion in property running costs alone.
-- Improved retention - Within BT, time lost due to illness has reduced by 63%. Retention of employees, particularly after maternity leave, is 99% vs. the industry average of 47%. This saves in training and recruitment for BT equating to $14M savings.
-- Lower employee absenteeism: BT's home workers are absent for 5.4 fewer days than their office based colleagues. Reductions of over 60% in absenteeism have been measured.
-- Reduced travel costs: Conferencing has eliminated more than 800,000 face-to-face meetings a year, $270 million in cost savings and $206 million a year in productivity gains.
-- Environmental benefits (Travel Time & Cost Savings): BT has used flexible working to achieve a savings of 12 million liters of fuel, and a reduction in CO2 emissions of 54,000 tons through less travel to work by employees and fewer buildings to heat.
