Original Press Release:

The Caterpillar 3003C/3024C and 3054C/E / 3056E family of engines

3003C/3024C - A compact power solution from the world's leading manufacturer of diesel and gas engines. Small in size, big on delivery Caterpillar's popular 3003C/3024C family of engines is satisfying the high demand among manufacturers for a compact and productive power solution. Quieter, cleaner and more efficient than its predecessor, this 3 and 4-cylinder, five-model family operates in the power band from 12kW to 45kW and meets all current EU and US EPA Stage II/Tier 2 off-highway emissions requirements. Positioned at the lower end of the Caterpillar power range, the 3003C/3024C engines take their maximum output to an impressive 45kW (60hp), thanks to the extra boost delivered by turbo-charging. Throughout the power band, the engine offers increased power, torque, torque rise while delivering excellent engine response, low-speed performance and machine productivity. This enhances machine performance while providing a wide range of power ratings tailored to meet a variety of customer needs. These high levels of performance have been achieved within a package size that is significantly smaller than its predecessor. To further reduce an already compact unit, the air inlet has been relocated to lower engine height while redesigning attachments to reduce its width. This combination of exceptional power and compact size makes the 3003C/3024C family a powerful offering for manufacturers producing all types of equipment. Exceptional performance with low environmental impact - Customers are increasingly concerned about the tough emissions targets and tight deadlines brought in with new emissions legislation. The 3003C/3024C family delivers excellent performance and will come on stream well ahead of USA EPA Tier 2 and EU Stage II exhaust emissions legislation due to go into effect at the beginning of 2003. The addition of a closed-circuit breather means the engine will not have oil carryover and crankcase fumes. The combined combustion and mechanical noise are significantly reduced compared to its predecessor, contributing to a reduction of up to 3 dBA. Low noise levels, in turn, drive down ancillary costs for OEM manufacturers for sound proofing, helping them to meet legislative responsibilities while boosting profits. Subjective levels of noise have also been addressed. Sound frequencies on the 3003C/3024C family have been reduced to ensure a more acceptable sound for the operator and those nearby. Being a significantly smaller engine, the 3003C/3024C fits well within the installation envelope of its predecessor, while all mounting points are arranged to ensure a seamless conversion and minimal disruption upon installation. These engines combine to offer excellent productivity from a compact package that has set new standards for the off-highway industry. Add in the additional benefits of low environmental impact, low cost of ownership and total product support, it's no wonder the 3003C/3024C has proven to be a popular addition to the Caterpillar product family. 3054E/C / 3056E - a total product solution from a world-leading company Caterpillar has combined advanced electronics with significant hardware improvements to launch an engine that sets new standards of productivity and durability for the off-highway equipment industry. The 3054/3056 family operates in the 50kW to 130 kW power range and is available in production well ahead of all current EU and US EPA Stage II/Tier 2 off-highway emissions requirements. It includes both 4 and 6-cylinder models offering a high degree of choice for customers. The 3054, a 4.4 liter 4-cylinder engine, is available with naturally aspirated, turbocharged, or turbocharged with air-to-air after cooling variants, all with the option of mechanical or electronic control. Advanced engineering on the 3054 means the engine can deliver excellent torque and power without compromising on emissions while reducing noise levels. The 3056, a 6-litre 6-cylinder engine, is offered with a turbocharged and air-to-air after cooling, as well as electronic engine control. The 3056 combines enhanced engine performance with sophisticated control and machine integration for exceptional productivity in the workplace. The 3054/3056 family offers increased power, torque, torque rise and precise curve shaping throughout the range resulting in excellent engine response, low-speed performance and machine driveability. This enhances machine performance while providing a wide range of power ratings tailored to meet customer needs. The 3054 delivers 50-97kw/67-130 bhp, with up to 7% more power, 12% more peak torque and 41% more low-speed torque. The 3056 delivers 75-129.5kw/100-174bhp with up to 12% more low speed torque. The 3054/3056 is available with electronic control as standard on the 6-cylinder engine and as an option on all 4-cylinder engines. Customers can choose an electronics package with enhanced engine performance, a more precise response, increased fuel economy, over previous models and a fuller integration with the machine. Alternatively, they can opt for a simple, robust and proven mechanical package that delivers exactly the level of performance they are looking for with the 4-cylinder engine. Electronic engine management also means a quicker response to operating conditions, improved throttle control, customized torque for machine driveability and response, with dependable and accurate engine control. Customers need engines that are fully emissions-compliant without compromising performance characteristics. Not only will the 3054/3056 surpass all market expectations, it is available well ahead of USA EPA Tier 2 and EU Stage II exhaust emissions legislation due to go into effect at the beginning of 2003. The addition of a closed-circuit breather means the engine will not have oil carryover and crankcase fumes. The combined combustion and mechanical noise are significantly reduced compared to its predecessor, contributing to a reduction of up to 3 dBA. Low noise levels, in turn, are driving down ancillary costs for OEM manufacturers such as sound proofing, helping them to meet legislative responsibilities while boosting profits. Lower cost of ownership for improved profitability is a feature of both families of engines. Service periods for these new models, have been doubled to 500 hours as standard equating to just one service per year for many users. Engine oil consumption has dropped to 0.2% of fuel used, and the time taken to complete the service is minimized thanks to the availability of single-side servicing on all models. A wide range of parts options is also available to tailor the engine to existing and new applications. This includes cooling fans, flywheels, flywheel housings, exhaust outlets, induction manifolds, turbocharger positions, starters and alternators, making the engines truly customizable. Total product support from a global dealer network Cat dealer specialists will support product development at the customer's factory, and this expertise goes with the machines wherever they operate.
