Large-Bore Magnetic Encoder Solves Speed and Position Sensing Problem in Harsh Environment

Lebanon, N.H. January 3, 2005. A major manufacturer of torque flanges has solved the problem of accurate speed and position sensing in the harsh environment of automotive dynamometers and power train test stands. After experiencing early failure of their optical encoders, the manufacturer installed a large-bore (200 mm) magnetic encoder directly into the torque flange, providing a compact, reliable speed and position sensing solution.

The magnetic encoder, designed and produced by Admotec, Inc. (www.admotec.com) reliably measures the speed and position of the power train components operating at up to 10,000 rpm, and is unaffected by the oil, dirt and the 100° C temperatures of the application.

The large-bore magnetic encoder, Admotec's Series EK600, provides high resolution feedback of up to 3000 cycles per revolution from any rotating shaft up to 250 mm (10 in.) in diameter. The magnetic encoder consists of a custom-configured magnetic encoder wheel and a magnetoresistive sensor with differential line driver outputs for two incremental channels in quadrature and a once-per-revolution index marker. Over 100 combinations of resolution, wheel OD, and operating air gap are available.

Admotec develops and produces precision magnetic encoders and solid rotor resolvers that provide high performance for the demanding conditions of aerospace, automotive, nuclear, heavy mill duty and general industrial applications. With offices in Lebanon, New Hampshire, and Zurich, Switzerland, Admotec is well-positioned to meet the motion and position sensing needs of original equipment manufacturers around the world.
