Sophos's ES4000 Establishes Security and Manageability Benchmarks with Next Generation Email Security Appliance

LYNNFIELD, Mass., Feb. 13 -- Sophos, a world leader in integrated threat management solutions, announces the ES4000, the industry's first single-source, managed email security appliance. Featuring reduced administration, automated security updating, and intuitive web-based interface, the ES4000 gives email and security managers an optimized tool to face an increasingly hazardous network threat environment of viruses, spam, spyware, Trojans, and other forms of malware.

For years, many of the industry's email security appliances have integrated Sophos's virus scanning and anti-spam technology, and now the ES4000 offers enterprise-class protection directly from Sophos. By offloading administrative tasks and eliminating command line management, the ES4000 means organizations can effect deeper email security optimization, allowing resources to be redirected toward risk mitigation rather than technology management.

"External threats to network security are always evolving, and email security appliances like the ES4000 are needed to help organizations keep up with the pace of innovation displayed by virus writers, malware writers, and other dangerous elements," said Chris Christiansen, IDC VP of Security Products & Services. "For enterprises that need robust email security but want the convenience of an easy-to-manage appliance, Sophos's ES4000 is a strong option."

The ES4000 is ideally suited to organizations that process millions of email messages per day. The ES4000 offers remote monitoring, built-in diagnostics, on-demand remote assistance, and dashboard management that simplifies control of the email gateway with an instant view of system performance. The ES4000 also includes automated capacity optimization, as well as 24-hour "heartbeat" monitoring to ensure uptime while reducing administration. In addition, end-to-end message forensics, statistical reporting, and predictive capacity and availability metrics give security managers more tools to better manage their email security and infrastructure.

"Many of our customers and prospects are looking for an alternative email security solution that requires minimum administrative effort without sacrificing robust, proactive protection," said Tom Farrell, president of Ohio-based Alternative Computer Technology Inc. (ACT). "The availability of the ES4000 means we can help those organizations meet their specific security needs, with the added benefit of Sophos's world-class protection."

"Sophos technology has been powering some of the most successful appliances on the market for years. In fact, 30% of companies running appliances are already benefiting from having Sophos under the hood," said Steve Munford, CEO, Sophos. "As the threats of viruses and spam have unified, so should the protection. Sophos is uniquely positioned to deliver the highest level of protection and the best email security experience."

ES4000 features include:
-- Automated system maintenance
-- Remote monitoring and secure remote assistance
-- Exception-driven alerting
-- Genotype(TM) virus and spam detection techniques
-- Onboard quarantine
-- Single-source anti-spam, anti-virus protection
-- Continuous global threat detection from SophosLabs(TM)
-- Market-proven Sophos PureMessage(TM) platform

The ES4000 will be available at the end of the first quarter through a select group of Sophos's channel partners.
