Exar Introduces Industry First 16Mbps Dual UART Product Family

Sixth Industry First - Company's Technology Focus Extended, Devices Offer Customers Additional Design Options

FREMONT, Calif., June 26 // -- Exar Corporation (NASDAQ:EXAR), a leading provider of high-performance, mixed-signal silicon solutions for the worldwide communications infrastructure, announced today an industry first Universal Asynchronous Receiver Transmitter (UART) product family. When added to the Company's serial communications portfolio, it reconfirms Exar's commitment as a market-leader with one of the industry's broadest UART offerings. At 16Mbps, the XR16V2x5x series is the first in a new generation of feature rich devices supporting faster data rates required by telecommunications and Ethernet routers, cellular data devices, portable appliances and factory automation/process control, amongst others.

"The XR16V2x5x series has numerous features that quickly differentiates it in the marketplace such as a programmable fractional baud rate generator with prescaler, lower operating voltages and 5V tolerant inputs and several FIFO choices," said Levent Ozcolak, division vice president and general manager, Interface Products Division. "Equally compelling, we are offering higher performance without a price premium; this is a key advantage to our customers answering the demand for lower power devices in a cost-sensitive market environment."

Six Industry Firsts
The XR16V2x5x series marks Exar's sixth industry-first offering in the last 15 months. In April 2006, Exar launched the UART and RS-232 combination, the XR19L2xx series; in February 2006, was the XR17V252 a dual-channel 66MHz PCI 3.0 compliant UART; in December 2005, the Company introduced the industry's first 1.8V single-channel UART (XR16L570) in 24 and 32-pin QFN packages; in June 2005, Exar added the industry's smallest UART (XR16L580); lastly, in March 2005, Exar introduced the industry's first multi-channel 66MHz PCI 3.0 compliant UART family, the first in this series was an eight-channel (XR17V258) solution.

"Faster data throughput has become synonymous with cutting edge and inherently more sophisticated technology applications," said Rakesh Bhatia, strategic marketing manager, Interface Products Division. "Exar's XR16V2x5x series is ideal for these growing market opportunities as these new devices can double existing data transmission performance. These, and other products to follow, are part of a new generation of solutions driven by advanced requirements requested by our customers."

Series Details
The XR16V2x5x series is composed of nine different devices, all sharing a similar core feature set. These features include PowerSave mode, automatic sleep mode, Intel/Motorola bus interface, 5V tolerant inputs, operating voltages of 2.25V to 3.63V and a fractional baud rate generator. In addition, each device has selectable TX and RX FIFO trigger levels, automatic hardware and software controls and a wireless infrared encoder/decoder.

The XR16V2550/51/52 series are 16-byte FIFO devices; the XR16V2650/51/52 series are 32-byte FIFO devices and the XR16V2750/51/52 series are 64-byte FIFO devices. The XR16V2750/51/52 devices have additional features such as programmable trigger levels and Auto RS-485 half-duplex direction control.

Tools and Support
The XR16V2x5x series is supported by standard serial port software drivers for popular operating systems including Windows CE 4.2 and 5.0, XP and Linux. With the availability of software drivers and Exar's application support hot line, UART customers can greatly accelerate their product development.

Packages and Availability
The XR16V2550, XR16V2551, XR16V2650, XR16V2651, XR16V2750 are all available in either a 48-pin TQFP, or a 32-pin QFN package. The XR16V2552, XR16V2652, and XR16V2752 are all available in either a 44-pin PLCC, or a 32-pin QFN package. The XR16V2751 is available in a 48-pin TQFP package. All nine devices are available now, operate over the commercial temperature range, and in 1,000 piece quantities are priced in the mid-$3.00 range.
