Dissolved Oxygen Sensor suits carbonated beverage process.

Press Release Summary:

Able to withstand caustic clean-in-place cycles, Model Bx438 monitors trace levels of dissolved oxygen in beer and other carbonated beverages. Steel-meshed, double-layer membrane enables sensor to withstand high pressure and temperature while maintaining high diffusion rates. Zero polarization set point ensures accuracy. Changes in flow rates have minimal impact on measurements, so sensor experiences minimal drift in low flow and no flow environments.

New Emerson Long-Life Dissolved Oxygen Sensor for Carbonated Beverage Processing

Outperforms Competitive Technologies for Greater Accuracy and Lower Total Cost of Ownership

Irvine, Calif. (July 26, 2004) -- The new Rosemount Analytical Model Bx438 dissolved oxygen sensor for carbonated beverage processing from Emerson Process Management is designed for longer life and lower total cost of ownership than technologies currently on the market. The sensor is designed to monitor trace levels of dissolved oxygen in beer and other carbonated beverages and withstands more caustic clean-in-place cycles than other dissolved oxygen sensors.

The Model Bx438 uses a robust membrane design that is key to the sensor's long life and high performance. Most dissolved oxygen sensors operate by reduction of oxygen at the surface of the cathode. If the cathode is in direct contact with the solution, then contamination from proteins and other fouling agents from the process may lead to inaccurate readings. The Model Bx438 sensor features a proprietary steel-meshed, double-layer membrane that is less sensitive to fouling elements and enables the sensor to withstand high pressure and temperature while maintaining high diffusion rates, resulting in stable outputs and fast response times. In addition, the acidic electrolyte lasts longer than sensors using alkaline electrolyte solutions.

"The long life and reduced maintenance requirements of the Model Bx438 help breweries and carbonated beverage plants improve product quality while reducing costs," said John Wright, vice president of marketing, Emerson Process Management, Rosemount Analytical. "The key is the sensor's electrode construction which ensures stability even after numerous sterilization cycles. In fact, competitive dissolved oxygen sensors often require maintenance after as few as three to five cycles, but the Bx438 lasts through as many as 30 to 50 cycles."

The Model Bx438 is also designed to ensure accuracy through the sensor's unique membrane design and zero polarization voltage set point. Because of the sensor's design, changes in flow rates have minimal impact on dissolved oxygen measurements, so the sensor experiences minimal drift in low flow and no flow environments. In addition, many competitive dissolved oxygen sensors set the polarization voltage to 670 mV, but this set point may lead to offset readings due to carbon dioxide effects at low oxygen concentrations. The Model Bx438 uses a zero polarization set point, resulting in the industry's most accurate dissolved oxygen readings.

The Model Bx438 is currently available for order and is priced at $1,287.00 U.S. The total cost of ownership for the Model Bx438, including membrane replacement, electrolyte replenishment, cathode replacement, and labor, is almost a third of the cost of competitive sensors. In addition, the simple-to-use Model Bx438 comes standard with a VP 6.0 connector head for easy installation and is compatible with Xmt-A, 5081-A and 54eA instruments.
