Linear Displacement Sensor Helps Keep Processes in Line
HARRISBURG, Pa., January 10 - Tyco Electronics recently added permanent magnet linear displacement (PLCD) sensors to its extensive line of passive electronics. PLCD sensors use the electromagnetic induction principle which has a primary winding around a soft magnetic core. Each end of the sensor carries a second coil winding and when a permanent magnet is in the vicinity of the sensor, the core is interrupted at that point and two separate transformers are created. Each transformer generates an induced voltage in the secondary coils. The induced voltage of zero to 5VDC in turn provides proportional feedback relative to the position of the magnet in respect to the sensor's magnetic core.
This type of linear sensing is often used in many types of drives, machinery, automation systems and conveyors. Additionally, the PLCD sensor can be applied to rotary actuator applications. If necessary, a standard signal processing ASIC can be integrated with the sensor for AC voltage supply, internal signal processing and DC out signal.
PLCD sensors operate without being mechanically connected to the driving mechanism; therefore, the sensor can be actuated through walls made from non-magnetic materials. This feature is particularly useful in hydraulic and pneumatic cylinder sensing applications. Since the sensor is contactless, it does not wear and is virtually maintenance free.
PLCD sensors have a measurement range of 15mm to 400mm with a sensor magnet gap range of 1 to 20mm. Environmental sealing is rated at IP67 with higher ratings available on request.
