T.M. Smith Tool Introduces New Fith-II Radial Quick-Change Floating Tap and Reamer Holder

New differential drive floating system provides true smooth floating action

T.M. Smith Tool International Corporation announces that it has introduced the new FITH-II quick-change coolant-thru floating tap and reamer tool holder that provides a true round float with no cornering effect.

For use with machines with synchronized feed and spindle rotation, the FITH-II holder applies a unique twelve ball differentiated drive system, that is designed to provide a smoother radial float than conventional drive pin designs. The drive design also allows the tool holder to be manufactured in smaller diameters, ideal for application with close-center cluster spindles, while maintaining high radial torque. Even with coolant pressures as high as 1000 psi, the FITH-II design floats freely.

The FITH-II also features adjustable coolant flow control to allow even volume of coolant to match the corresponding coolant holes in the cutting tools. This reduces the amount of back pressure and allows the floating holder to work properly under any coolant flow level. Adjustment for centering pressure is an additional feature that responds to the sensitivity of the float. This is particularly beneficial when tapping small holes or when fine reaming or honing.

The drive coupling for the FITH-II tool holder is the T.M. Smith six-ball design, Fig. 1, that provides greater radial torque and longer tool life. Chip shields are also provided to keep coolant and chips from entering the front of the mechanism.

FITH-II quick-change floating tap and reamer holders are available with Acme & trapezoidal metric shanks, Morse taper shanks, Jacobs taper shanks, straight shanks and also in a straight shank collet style. The tool holders will accept Bilz, Collis, Universal, Lyndex and many other tap adapters. Special designs are available on request.

T.M. Smith Tool International Corporation was founded in the 1957. It is a leader in the design and manufacture of quick change tool holders for drilling, reaming and tapping. Overtime it has become well known, particularly in the worldwide automotive industry, for quality and innovative design and engineering. The company currently holds over 60 U.S. and international patents in tool holding technology.
