Overview
The IBM Deskside Hardware Management Console (HMC) (7310-C05) joins other HMC models to provide POWER5(TM) and POWER5+(TM) server support. Along with the other HMC models, it provides a dedicated workstation that allows you to configure and manage partitions and Capacity on Demand on POWER5 and POWER5+ servers. One HMC can manage multiple servers and dual HMCs can provide redundant support by managing the same system. To help ensure consistent function for all 7310 HMC models, each HMC is shipped preloaded with the Hardware Management Console for POWER5 Licensed Machine Code (#0961).

The IBM p5 590, 595, and 575 and i5 595 must be managed by an HMC. When Capacity Upgrade on Demand is implemented, an HMC is required to manage any POWER5 or POWER5+ server.

The HMC offers a service focal point for the systems it controls. It is connected to a dedicated port on the service processor of the POWER5 or POWER5+ system via an Ethernet connection. The Ethernet connections from HMC to p5 590, 595, and 575 and i5 595 must be via private LAN with the HMC configured as a DHCP server, whereas other POWER5 or POWER5+ systems can be either on a private or public LAN. LAN Tools, such as call-home and error log notification, are available through a modem or the Internet (SSL supported for call-home via HTTPS) for determining problems and providing service support.

Multiple POWER5 or POWER5+ processor-based servers can be managed by one HMC, either physically attached to the server or logically attached over a LAN.

Key prerequisites
A POWER5 or POWER5+ server that supports an HMC
