Demand for MTS C-Series Sensor Grows in Medical Applications

CARY, N.C. (August 21, 2007) - MTS Sensors has developed a C-Series sensor that is
ideal for linear-position and liquid-level measurement in medical applications such as
fluid collection and disposal, contrast injection fluid delivery, hospital bed motion, dental
chair positioning, and patient mobility and accessibility equipment. The C-Series is an
ideal, cost-effective solution for medical applications because it is small, embeddable,
highly repeatable and reliable. Based on proven Temposonics® technology, the C-Series
sensor replaces older technology sensors such as linear potentiometers and LVDTs with
reliable, non-contact magentostrictive sensors.

"Size is critical in medical applications, and the C-Series' small dimensions, as
well as its ability to be either embedded or bolted on, makes it a versatile option for
patient-focused equipment," said Jesse Russell, MTS Commercial Products Marketing
Manager. "In addition, the C-Series technology and durability are a good fit for the highreliability
expectations of often mission-critical equipment used in hospitals and medical
facilities."

Another significant benefit of the C-Series sensor is that it is absolute, so when
there is a power glitch or loss, a process can resume where it left off without necessitating
recalibration.

The C-Series Core sensor has a 0 to 5Vdc or PWM output available, and can be
powered with a standard 5 Volt power supply. In addition, the modular architecture
allows the addition of a second electronics board that configures the sensor to operate
using 12- or 24-volt power and also adds additional protection circuitry for EMI
immunity.

Also, a three-wire option that replaces the integrated connector with three discrete
wires allows sealing against the wire insulation instead of a cable jacket providing a
water-tight method of sealing of the electronics housing. When more robust
environmental protection is required by the application, the modular design of the CSeries
sensor allows for the addition of standardized IP67 rated packaging that effectively
houses the Core sensor.
