DC/DC Converters suit high-end telecom applications.

Press Release Summary:

Ultra Series 100 W, 1/8 brick converters provide single isolated outputs of 2.5, 3.3, and 5.0 V, with continuous current ratings of 40, 30, and 20 A, respectively. Units feature input range of 36-75 Vdc and generate output that can be adjusted from 80-110% of nominal using single resistor. Measuring 0.9 x 2.3 in., converters are based on open-frame, single-board package. They provide true monotonic start-up under normal and pre-biased load conditions.

Artesyn Lauches World's First Wide-Input 100W Eighth-Brick DC/DC Converters

Telecom-standard 36 to 75V input, with choice of 2.5V/40A, 3.3V/30A or 5.0V/20A outputs
Ultra high conversion efficiencies of 92% & power densities in excess of 160W/in³

Framingham, MA, June 21, 2004 - - Artesyn Technologies Inc. (Nasdaq:ATSN) has extended its leadership Typhoon(TM) family of board mounted power with the addition of a new 100W series of eighth-brick DC/DC converters. Known as the 'ultra' series, which push eighth-brick performance to unprecedented levels, the new converters provide single isolated outputs of 2.5V, 3.3V and 5.0V, with continuous current ratings of 40A, 30A and 20A respectively. All three converters provide exceptionally high efficiencies and power densities - the 5.0V model, for example, has a typical efficiency of 92% and achieves in excess of 160W/in³. The 100W 'ultra' series provides a 35% improvement in power capability over second generation, eighth-brick products and up to 200% improvement over earlier first generation competitor offerings.

Artesyn's new ultra series eighth-brick converters are intended primarily for high-end telecom applications such as mobile/optical switches, high capacity network routers and similar systems using distributed power architectures. Their very high current, efficiency and power density attributes, combined with fast transient response capabilities, make them especially suitable for high functionality cards designed around the latest low-voltage silicon. These new eighth-brick models are lower cost, more space-efficient alternatives to earlier-generation 100W telecom-compatible quarter- and half-bricks. They occupy just 62% of the card space of industry-standard quarter-bricks but have the same pin-out, enabling designers to start migrating to higher performance, smaller form factor converters without making any changes to the circuit or card layout.

The converters feature a wide input voltage range of 36 to 75VDC, and generate a single output voltage which can be adjusted from 80% to 110% of nominal using a single resistor. They have no minimum load requirement, and provide a true monotonic start-up characteristic under both normal and pre-biased load conditions, significantly simplifying design-in. The patented conversion topology - used for all Typhoon brick converters - eliminates the need for optocouplers and combines advanced processor control of both primary- and secondary-side circuitry with precision synchronous rectification. The result is a high efficiency, wide bandwidth design which provides excellent regulation and transient response characteristics. The converters have a set point accuracy of ±1.5% and maintain output voltage regulation to within 0.1% for all input voltages in the range 36 to 75V, and to within 0.2% for all permissible load currents. Transient response performance is equally impressive: the output of the 2.5V, 40A converter, for example, typically deviates by just 90mV for a 1A/µs step change in load current and will totally recover within 20µs.

As with all Typhoon family eighth-brick converters, the new 100W Ultra series models have an industry-standard 0.9 x 2.3in (22.9 x 58.4mm) footprint and are based on an open-frame, single-board package designed for through-hole mounting. Extensive use of surface-mount components and planar, in-the-board transformer structures minimizes device profile, allowing the installed height to be kept to just 0.3in (7.6mm). This exceptionally low figure makes the converters especially suitable for applications using very tight inter-board spacing, such as latest-generation telecom switches and optical metro routers.

The converters offer remote sense and remote on/off facilities as standard, and have a typical start-up time of 10ms when driving a resistive load. They also feature under-voltage lockout, as well as non-latching over-voltage protection, and are comprehensively protected against short-circuit and over-temperature conditions, with automatic recovery. The converters carry a full set of international safety approvals, including EN60950 VDE and UL/cUL60950.

Sample quantities of Artesyn's wide-input 100W Ultra eighth-brick converters are available for immediate delivery. In OEM quantities of 1000, unit prices are US$64.90. Standard lead-time is 8-10 weeks ARO.
