Next Generation Wide Input, Dual Output 7.5W DC/DC Converters Reduce Electromagnetic Emissions and Lower Component Count

o New generation of converters feature 2:1 input range
o Metal casing for reduced emissions
o Industry-standard pin-out allows for drop-in replacement
o On-board protection

September 23, 2005, Tucson, Arizona - C&D Technologies (NYSE: CHP) has introduced a new generation of wide input DC/DC converters that will save space, reduce component count and minimize emissions in applications requiring dual positive/negative voltage outputs and up to 7.5W of output power.

Housed in a five-sided metal case, the NDX DC/DC converter series offers a choice of nominal input voltages of either 24V or 48V, allowing a total input range of 18V to 36V and 36V to 72V respectively. An industry standard five-pin arrangement allows for drop-in replacement in existing designs.

For each voltage input +/- 12V and +/- 15V output options are available, with an unbalanced loading capability ensuring maximum design flexibility. Typical load regulation is specified at 0.2%, while nominal noise ratings are just 50mV (peak-to-peak).

In addition to their wide input capability, the NDX devices enable component count reduction through on-board continuous short circuit protection and a remote on/off feature that allows the converters to be powered down via TTL inputs.

Devices in the NDX series measure only 1.26in x 0.98 x 0.39in, giving a power density of 15.4W/in³. Isolation is rated at 1kVDC and efficiency levels are in excess of 81%. All devices in the series have an operating temperature of -40°C to +85°C. In order to ensure maximum reliability C&D Technologies has not employed electrolytic capacitors in the NDX design.

Available now, with custom variations on request, the pricing for the NDX series is below $11 in OEM quantities.

C&D Technologies, Inc. is a technology company that produces and markets systems for the conversion and storage of electrical power, including telecom/industrial batteries, rectifiers and electronics. This specialised focus has established the company as a leading and valued supplier of products in two major categories - reserve power systems and electronic power supplies. Corporate headquarters are in Blue Bell, Pennsylvania, USA and the company is traded on the NYSE under the symbol 'CHP'.
The Power Electronics Division of C&D Technologies, Inc. has its headquarters in Tucson, Arizona, USA, with manufacturing in USA, Mexico, UK and China plus sales locations in the USA, UK, France, Germany, China and Japan. The division designs, manufactures and distributes DC/DC converters, AC/DC power supplies and magnetics, and offers these products in custom, standard and modified-standard variations. These products, which are built to exacting requirements in ISO9000:2000-approved facilities, are typically used worldwide by Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) within telecommunications, computing, industrial and other high-tech applications.
In 2004 the product portfolio as well as the global design and manufacturing capabilities of the Power Electronics Division were significantly enhanced as a result of three key acquisitions. In May 2004, C&D acquired UK-based Celab Limited, a designer and manufacturer of power conversion products for military, cable television and high-end telecommunications applications. In June 2004, the company acquired Datel, Inc., a US-based producer of medium-power DC/DC converters, data acquisition products and digital panel meters. In September, C&D completed the acquisition of CPS, the former Power Systems Division of Celestica, Inc., a Canadian manufacturer of DC/DC and AC/DC power supplies.
