DC/DC Converter Designed for use in Increasingly Popular Power Over Ethernet Applications

High-efficiency single output isolated converter has flexibility to ease implementation

o 92% efficiency at full load
o 52.5V, 200W output
o Open-frame design with industry standard pin-out

December 2005, Mansfield, Massachusetts - C&D Technologies (NYSE: CHP) has launched a DC/DC converter that significantly simplifies the design and implementation of Power over Ethernet (PoE) applications. The HHS04-520 module is able to generate the optimum isolated hub voltage to power at least 13 PoE enabled devices. The number can be increased for devices taking less than the maximum allowed power of 12.95W or if cable runs are short.

PoE is a technology for wired local area networks (LANs) that allows the power necessary for the operation of individual networked devices to be carried by data cables rather than separate power cords. The reduction in the number of cables required to install a network coupled with lower cost and greater installation flexibility compared to traditional wiring, is making PoE an increasingly popular approach.

The half-brick HHS04-520 complies with the IEE802.3af standard that stipulates requirements including start-up characteristics and low-noise for equipment to be used in PoE and IP telephony applications. The module delivers high efficiency of 92% at 52.5V, 200W output. Design flexibility is provided by an input voltage range of 36V to 75V and an industry standard pin-out further simplifies the integration of the HHS04-520 into existing designs. The module also features 2250VDC isolation.

An open frame design along with a heatsink-attach option allows for flexible thermal management of the HHS04-520 in the customer's end system.

"C&D strives to deliver solutions that meet the evolving needs of communications OEMs." Said Kulbir Dhillon, C&D's director of product strategy. "The HHS04 isolated half-brick provides OEMs with flexibility, faster time-to-market, lower risk and a lower total cost of ownership for their end-system solution." Included in the comprehensive features of the new DC/DC converter are remote sense, remote on/off, over-temperature protection and trim capability. The HHS04-520 measures 2.40" (L) x 2.28"(W) x 0.43"(H) and has an operating temperature range of -40°C to +100°C.

Unit pricing for the C&D Technologies HHS04-520 is $62.60 each in quantities of 1,000 (USA).

C&D Technologies, Inc. is a technology company that produces and markets systems for the conversion and storage of electrical power, including telecom/industrial batteries, rectifiers and electronics. This specialised focus has established the company as a leading and valued supplier of products in two major categories - reserve power systems and electronic power supplies. Corporate headquarters are in Blue Bell, Pennsylvania, USA and the company is traded on the NYSE under the symbol 'CHP'.

The Power Electronics Division of C&D Technologies, Inc. has its headquarters in Mansfield, Massachusetts, USA, with manufacturing in USA, Mexico, UK and China plus sales locations in the USA, UK, France, Germany, China and Japan. The division designs, manufactures and distributes DC/DC converters, AC/DC power supplies, magnetics, Data Acquisition devices and panel meters, and offers these products in custom, standard and modified-standard variations. These products, which are built to exacting requirements in ISO9000:2000-approved facilities, are typically used worldwide by Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) within telecommunications, computing, industrial and other high-tech applications.

In 2004 the product portfolio as well as the global design and manufacturing capabilities of the Power Electronics Division were significantly enhanced as a result of three key acquisitions. In May 2004, C&D acquired UK-based Celab Limited, a designer and manufacturer of power conversion products for military, cable television and high-end telecommunications applications. In June 2004, the company acquired Datel, Inc., a US-based producer of medium-power DC/DC converters, data acquisition products and digital panel meters. In September 2004, C&D completed the acquisition of CPS, the former Power Systems Division of Celestica, Inc., a Canadian manufacturer of DC/DC and AC/DC power supplies.
