DC/DC Converter produces 3.3 V @ 1.4 A from 7-36 V input.

Press Release Summary:

Supplied in 8-lead MSOP package, LT1936 current mode PWM step-down DC/DC converter has internal 1.9 A power switch, 3.6-36 V input range, and adjustable output down to 1.20 V. Soft-start eliminates input current surge during start-up, and 500 kHz operating frequency allows use of ceramic capacitors. Operating at efficiencies to 88%, converter integrates cycle-by-cycle current limit, which provides protection against shorted outputs.

500kHz, 1.4A (IOUT) 36V Step-Down DC/DC Converter in MSOP

MILPITAS, CA - April 19, 2005 - Linear Technology Corporation announces the LT1936, a current mode PWM step-down DC/DC converter with an internal 1.9A power switch, packaged in a tiny 8-lead thermally enhanced MSOP package. Its wide input range of 3.6V to 36V makes the LT1936 suitable for regulating power from a wide variety of sources, including unregulated wall transformers, 24V industrial supplies and automotive batteries. For automotive applications, the device can easily operate with sub 4V inputs, which is required for automotive "cold crank" conditions. Its 500kHz operating frequency allows the use of tiny, low cost inductors and ceramic capacitors, resulting in low, predictable output ripple.

The LT1936's low VCESAT (410mV @1.2A) internal switch ensures efficiencies as high as 88%, maximizing battery run-time. Cycle-by-cycle current limit provides protection against shorted outputs, and soft-start eliminates input current surge during start up. A low current (<2uA) shutdown mode provides easy power management in battery-powered systems.

The LT1936EMS8E is available from stock in a thermally enhanced MSOP-10 package. A higher temperature grade "I" version, the LT1936IMS8E, is also available from stock. Pricing starts at $2.85 each and $3.42 each, respectively, for 1,000 piece quantities.
