Dual Output DC/DC Converters with High Power Density and Integrated Protection Save Space and Reduce Component Count

June 29, 2005, Tucson, Arizona - C&D Technologies (NYSE: CHP) has expanded its range of board mounted isolated DC/DC converters with a series of dual output, 3W devices in miniature SIP packaging. As well as a much smaller form factor than other 3W dual output parts, the new NDH series offers high levels of integrated functionality to minimise external components and simplify circuit layout.

Converters in the NDH series have a wide 2:1 input voltage range to allow maximum design flexibility, and have outputs regulated to 0.5%. Nominal input voltage options are 24V and 48V, with respective input ranges of 18-36V and 36-72V. Dual output voltage options are 12V and 15V for each nominal input voltage.

In all cases, isolation between the input and outputs is rated at 1kVDC. Typical line and load regulation are rated at 0.15% and 0.2% respectively, while integrated functionality includes continuous short circuit protection with current foldback.

Supplied in fully encapsulated, UL 94V-0-compliant SIP packages with dimensions of just 26.95 x 9.25 x 12.45mm, the new NDH converters feature a very high power density of 1.05W/cm³. All devices can deliver their full 3W output power at temperatures from -40°C to 85°C without the need for a heatsink or other additional cooling.

All devices in the NDH family combine SMD construction with ceramic capacitors, a ceramic substrate and a tough chip and wire bonded MOSFET power transistor die to ensure maximum operating life.

NDH converters have unit pricing of under $13 in OEM quantities. As well as standard 'off-the-shelf' parts, C&D Technologies can also offer custom solutions based on the NDH technology.

C&D Technologies, Inc. is a technology company that produces and markets systems for the conversion and storage of electrical power, including telecom/industrial batteries, rectifiers and electronics. This specialized focus has established the company as a leading and valued supplier of products in two major categories - reserve power systems and electronic power supplies.

Corporate headquarters are in Blue Bell, Pennsylvania, USA and the company is traded on the NYSE under the symbol 'CHP'.

The Power Electronics Division of C&D Technologies, Inc. has its headquarters in Tucson, Arizona, USA, with manufacturing in the USA, Mexico, UK and China plus sales locations in the USA, UK. France, Germany, China and Japan. The division designs, manufactures and distributes DC/DC converters, AC/DC power supplies and magnetics, and offers these products in custom, standard and modified-standard variations. These products, which are built to exacting requirements in ISO9000:2000-approved facilities, are typically used worldwide by Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) within telecommunications, computing, industrial and other high-tech applications.

In 2004 the product portfolio as well as the global design and manufacturing capabilities of the Power Electronics Division were significantly enhanced as a result of three acquisitions. In May 2004, C&D acquired UK-based Celab Limited, a designer and manufacturer of power conversion products for military, cable television and high-end telecommunications applications. In June 2004, the company acquired Datel, Inc., a US-based producer of medium-power DC/DC converters, data acquisition products and digital panel meters. In September, C&D completed the acquisition of CPS, the former Power Systems Division of Celestica, Inc., a Canadian manufacturer of DC/DC and AC/DC power supplies.
