High Amp-Density Regulated DC/DC Converter Delivers Full Power at High Temperature with 91% Efficiency

Single output isolated converter for distributed power architecture applications

o Delivers up to 21 Amps at 12V output

o Capable of full power output up to 110°C

o Easy to use design with multiple I/O protection features

September 2, 2005, Tucson, Arizona - C&D Technologies (NYSE: CHP) has announced the availability of a new single output half-brick isolated DC/DC converter. The UHP-12/21-D48 is ideal for isolated bus converter applications in distributed power architecture designs where there is a demand for a tightly regulated 12V secondary with high efficiency. The new unit features 2250V isolation and is able to deliver up to 21A at temperatures up to 110°C alleviating the need for forced air cooling in all except the most severe applications.

Optimised for ease of use, the UHP-12/21-D48 has a wide 36V to 75 V input range and is supplied on a 2.3-inch x 2.4-inch open-frame package with industry standard half-brick pin-outs and mounting. Effective thermal management can be achieved through conduction cooling by attaching the UHP-12/21-D48 to a housing wall or via an optional baseplate.

Important elements of the UHP-12/21-D48's design are its multiple I/O protection features that help to avoid damage to outside equipment as well to the converter itself. These include converter shutdown on sustained input undervoltage, output overcurrent, output short circuit and overvoltage and thermal shutdown. Overload currents that are less than a short circuit limit the output current so that operation is not interrupted. Upon short circuit shutdown 'hiccup mode' will automatically attempt to restart the UHP-12/21-D48 once the overload is removed.

Further standard features included in the specification of the new unit include remote sense, trim, on/off control and start-up into pre-biased load.

The UHP-12/21-D48 carries the CE mark and has UL/EN60950 safety approvals, it has also been designed for RoHS compliance. Unit pricing for the C&D Technologies UHP-12/21-D48 is $67.35 in OEM quantities (USA 100-piece pricing), and delivery is from stock to 6 weeks.

C&D Technologies, Inc. is a technology company that produces and markets systems for the conversion and storage of electrical power, including telecom/industrial batteries, rectifiers and electronics. This specialised focus has established the company as a leading and valued supplier of products in two major categories - reserve power systems and electronic power supplies. Corporate headquarters are in Blue Bell, Pennsylvania, USA and the company is traded on the NYSE under the symbol 'CHP'.

The Power Electronics Division of C&D Technologies, Inc. has its headquarters in Tucson, Arizona, USA, with manufacturing in USA, Mexico, UK and China plus sales locations in the USA, UK, France, Germany, China and Japan. The division designs, manufactures and distributes DC/DC converters, AC/DC power supplies and magnetics, and offers these products in custom, standard and modified-standard variations. These products, which are built to exacting requirements in ISO9000:2000-approved facilities, are typically used worldwide by Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) within telecommunications, computing, industrial and other high-tech applications.

In 2004 the product portfolio as well as the global design and manufacturing capabilities of the Power Electronics Division were significantly enhanced as a result of three key acquisitions. In May 2004, C&D acquired UK-based Celab Limited, a designer and manufacturer of power conversion products for military, cable television and high-end telecommunications applications. In June 2004, the company acquired Datel, Inc., a US-based producer of medium-power DC/DC converters, data acquisition products and digital panel meters. In September, C&D completed the acquisition of CPS, the former Power Systems Division of Celestica, Inc., a Canadian manufacturer of DC/DC and AC/DC power supplies.
