FOCUS Enhancements Provides Power-Conserving TV-Out Solution for Freescale Semiconductor's Latest i.MX Applications Development System

- FS453 Daughter Card Now Available for Freescale i.MX21 Applications Processor Targeting Cell Phones and Media Appliances -

CAMPBELL, CA, July 7, 2004 - FOCUS Enhancements, Inc. (NASDAQ SC: FCSE), a worldwide leader in video production and conversion technology, today announced an FS453 video processor daughter card is available for the Freescale i.MX21 applications development system (ADS).

The FS453 daughter card provides a power-efficient TV-out solution necessary for power-sensitive applications such as still image projection or video streaming from media appliances or handheld devices. The i.MX21 microprocessor uses its Enhanced Multimedia Accelerator (eMMA) in conjunction with the FS453 to display video on TVs, flat panel displays and VGA monitors or projectors. The FS453 provides studio grade TV output in S-video, composite and component video formats and supports both NTSC and PAL standards. It also provides a VESA standard VGA output.

"The i.MX is the leading applications processor for a host of handheld appliances such as PDAs, smart cell phones and mobile entertainment devices," said Tom Hamilton, executive vice president and general manager of FOCUS Enhancements' semiconductor group. "The low-power, low-cost attributes of the FOCUS Enhancements' FS453 chip, coupled with the Freescale eMMA multimedia processor, opens a wide range of new markets for more powerful and intelligent handheld devices, enabled by i.MX's 'smart speed' performance-with-stamina advantage for long battery life. Multimedia streaming will be a key application target. Media-rich cell phones, media adapters and media pocketbooks are envisioned as design targets, where a TV is a better or additional display option than a small screen LCD."

"Each year customers expect more and demand more from handheld or small consumer electronic (CE) devices," said Mike Kelly, vice president of marketing for FOCUS Enhancements' semiconductor group. "The Freescale i.MX21 applications processor ups the ante on media performance in a small handheld design. This reference design targets video rich devices without compromising the battery life. This is another example of our growing number of consumer-oriented reference designs populated by FOCUS Enhancements' chips, where high quality video output is required by media intensive, convergence CE product designers."

The FS453 PC-to-TV Scan Converter supports the Freescale i.MX21, i.MX1 and i.MXL applications processors. The FS453 sister chip, the FS454, provides Macrovision compliance. The FS453 and FS454 integrated circuits (ICs) are compatible with virtually all PC graphics controller chips and allow PC-based hardware to be displayed on NTSC and PAL televisions, as well as high definition TV (HDTV) content at 720p, 1080i, or 480p to any size TV screen. The FS453/FS454 ICs deliver multiple display modes for output to PC monitors, multiple standard definition TV's (SDTV's), and HDTV's.
