CA's New Configuration Management Database Speeds ITIL Implementations

Automated Dependency Mapping Technology to Reduce Operational Risks And Ensure IT Alignment with Business Services

ISLANDIA, N.Y., Sept. 27 -- Extending its leadership in ITIL automation software, CA (NYSE:CA) today announced general availability of CA CMDB (configuration management database). CA also introduced automated dependency mapping technology from its acquisition of Cendura Corporation that correlates Configuration Items (CI) with business services, making CA CMDB an even more powerful tool for optimizing service levels.

CA CMDB helps consolidate and reconcile data to deliver a common view of a customer's IT environment, thereby providing greater management control over IT processes. By providing a "single source of the truth" about CIs and mapping them to business services, CA CMDB improves a wide range of ITIL processes -- including Change, Incident, Problem, Availability and Capacity Management. This speeds ITIL implementations, reduces change-related risks and helps IT organizations more effectively fulfill service level commitments in even the most complex enterprise computing environments.

"With CA CMDB, we can easily map our IT infrastructure to the business services we support," said Harry Butler, Support Center Manager at EFW. "This mapping enables us to manage changes and incidents in a way that's tightly aligned with the needs of the business."

Speeds Time-To-Value

CA CMDB speeds time-to-value with the industry's most comprehensive set of pre-defined content, including more than 70 relationship templates, 140 pre-defined CI classes, 200 out-of-the-box reports, and multiple adapters for integrating CI information. Utilizing Universal Federation Adapters -- including out-of-the-box integration with Microsoft SMS -- CA CMDB enables organizations to collect, manage and maintain a single view of configuration data from CA, third-party IT management applications and internally developed applications. CA CMDB also integrates with other CA management solutions, including Unicenter NSM, Unicenter Service Desk, Unicenter Asset Management and Unicenter Asset Portfolio Management.

By providing transparency into the relationships between technology resources, CA CMDB empowers technical staff to quickly find the root cause of complex IT service issues, enabling organizations to maintain higher service levels while reducing operational costs.

Enables Automatic Discovery and Population

The advanced technology that drove CA's acquisition of Cendura, a leading vendor of automated dependency mapping solutions, will allow customers to quickly and easily populate CA CMDB with up-to-date configuration information- including relationships between CIs. CA will begin offering this technology as a no-charge upgrade to CA CMDB customers in 90 days.

IT organizations often struggle to understand the relationships between the devices, processes and services in their enterprise computing environments. When vital services falter or extra demands are placed on the infrastructure, a clear understanding of these relationships becomes particularly critical. The automated dependency mapping technology will provide greater visibility into IT assets and activity and make CA CMDB an even more powerful tool for optimizing service levels within existing resource constraints.

CA CMDB also imports information from other relationship discovery tools and includes templates for easy integration with third-party automated dependency mapping solutions.

"The end-to-end lifecycle approach to discovery, application mapping and configuration management enabled by CA CMDB marks a significant leap forward," said Dennis Drogseth, director at EMA. "CA is clearly looking to set the bar high for its competitors."

Accelerates ITIL Best Practices

CA CMDB is the centerpiece of the CA Service Management Accelerator -- a broad set of software, services and education offerings for automating ITIL processes -- and serves as the critical point of integration between those processes.

"Corporate IT organizations can most effectively implement ITIL best practices when they have a unified repository of all the data they need to manage the disparate resources that support end-to-end service delivery," said Helge Scheil, chief architect for CA's Business Service Optimization business unit. "By facilitating the creation and ongoing management of this repository, CA CMDB significantly enhances IT performance and productivity."
