EMC Unveils New Entry Point to Symmetrix DMX-3 Performance and Functionality; Extends #1 High-End Storage Array Line

HOPKINTON, Mass., Oct. 23 // -- EMC Corporation, the world leader in information management and storage, today announced a new entry- level configuration for its flagship EMC(R) Symmetrix(R) DMX-3 family of storage systems. The Symmetrix DMX-3 model 950 offers customers a new, cost- effective entry point for enterprise-class storage, delivering the full performance, functionality and availability of Symmetrix DMX-3 systems in a compact footprint for maximum storage density and power/cooling efficiency.

Extending the features and functionality that have distinguished Symmetrix as the market-leading high-end storage platform for more than a decade, the new Symmetrix DMX-3 model 950 is optimized to meet the storage management challenges of high-end computing facilities, mid-sized organizations requiring high-performance storage and stringent data protection, and data centers with constrained space, power and cooling resources.

One of the largest challenges faced by data center managers is the cost and availability of adequate power and cooling. Symmetrix DMX-3 systems configured with standard 300 gigabyte disk drives help address these challenges by using 10% to 30% less electricity than comparably configured alternative high-end storage platforms while placing lower demands on data center cooling equipment. The power savings increase dramatically when Symmetrix DMX-3 systems are configured with 500 gigabyte low-cost Fibre Channel (LC-FC) drives. In comparison testing, Symmetrix DMX-3 systems configured with 500 gigabyte disk drives deliver up to 70% greater power efficiency compared with HDS/HP XP 12000 systems and IBM DS8300 systems configured with 300 gigabyte disk drives. The Symmetrix DMX-3 model 950 supports both 300 gigabyte and 500 gigabyte disk drives simultaneously.

This new system meets those requirements and gives customers a level of deployment flexibility that they previously did not have."

Customers can deploy the new Symmetrix DMX-3 model 950 system, which supports the full range of Symmetrix software, in a number of scenarios, including:

o Tiered Storage in a Single Array: With support for multiple types of disk drives, the Symmetrix DMX-3 model 950 enables advanced tiered storage in a small footprint to enhance end users' information lifecycle management strategies. Additionally, customers can use the 500 gigabyte LC-FC disk drives for disk-based backup and recovery, reducing backup windows and enabling fast restores. In large enterprise environments, customers can leverage the space-saving Symmetrix DMX-3 model 950 as a dedicated array for storing and managing large applications and/or to distribute storage resources across multiple frames.

o Consolidation for Improved Management: The Symmetrix DMX-3 model 950 offers the functionality and flexibility to enable customers to cost- effectively consolidate multiple application tiers, server platforms and connection protocols in a single array without compromising performance or availability. Consolidating multiple systems under a single, browser-based management console also alleviates staffing resource and training constraints. In addition, EMC's Symmetrix Management Console software (v5.3) makes it easier than ever before to configure Symmetrix systems and manage and monitor key functions like remote replication.

o Remote Replication and Data Protection: For the highest level of information protection, the compact Symmetrix DMX-3 model 950 is an ideal primary or secondary site platform to support remote replication of critical data over any distance using the industry-leading EMC SRDF/S (Symmetrix Remote Data Facility), SRDF/A (asynchronous) and EMC TimeFinder(R) family of software solutions.
