Isilon Releases New EX 6000 Product, Bringing Breakthrough Benefits of Clustered Storage to Rapidly Growing Near-Line Archive and Disk-to-Disk Backup Markets

New System Ideal to Address Enterprise Digital Archive Capacity Growth, Projected to Increase Ten-Fold Over Next Five Years to a Massive 27,000 Petabytes;

Cedars-Sinai, Kodak EasyShare Gallery and E! Networks Among Customers Using EX 6000 for Fast and Easy Access to Near-line Archive, Disk-to-Disk Backup and Disaster Recovery Data

SEATTLE, March 13 /-- Isilon(R) Systems, the leader in clustered storage, today announced the release of the Isilon EX 6000, a high capacity clustered storage product extending the Isilon IQ clustered storage platform into the burgeoning near-line archive, disk-to-disk backup and disaster recovery markets. Leveraging key software innovations delivered with today's release of Isilon's new OneFS(R) 4.0 distributed file system (see separate release), in concert with the industry's first implementation of SAS (Serial Attached SCSI) for storage expansion, the Isilon EX 6000, in combination with the Isilon IQ 6000, provides customers with the lowest cost, enterprise-class storage solution enabling instant online access for all enterprise information. In conjunction with its release, Isilon also announced today that Cedars-Sinai, Kodak EasyShare Gallery and E! Networks are among customers already using the EX 6000 in combination with Isilon IQ to cost-effectively store, retrieve and backup massive volumes of unstructured and file-based information.

"Digital archiving is one of the highest growth markets for enterprise data storage over the next five years and ESG believes that Isilon IQ is an excellent platform to address this critical sector of enterprise data growth," said Tony Asaro, Senior Analyst for The Enterprise Strategy Group. "Isilon IQ is extremely easy to manage, can scale in a granular fashion to massive amounts of capacity, and is a cost-effective storage system. In fact, ESG feels that Isilon IQ has always been well-suited for these applications and many of its customers are already using it in these ways. The addition of its new EX 6000 with its greater density takes it to the next level in value."

In a new research report entitled, "Digital Archiving: End-users Survey and Market Forecast 2006-2010," ESG conducted quantitative and qualitative research across 568 IT, business and records management professional in both private and public sector organization and reported the following conclusions:

o Disk-based digital archive and capacity will grow at a CAGR of more than 90 percent between 2005 and 2010 -- to more than 27,000 Petabytes or 27 Exabytes.
o The transition to disk-based archival storage is well underway as users seek to migrate new and existing digital assets off of tape-based media and onto disk-based archival storage systems.
o End-users are deploying -- and will continue to deploy -- specialized digital archiving and content management software and storage solutions.

"The enterprise market is demanding solutions that enable archive and backup data to be online and instantly accessible, but traditional, disk-based storage providers have failed to answer the call with easy and economical solutions," said Sujal Patel, CTO, Isilon Systems. "With the release of Isilon's new clustered storage systems, we have shattered these storage industry constraints and delivered an innovative solution that enables enterprises to insert critical digital archive information back into the mainstream enterprise workflow."

Designed as an extremely low cost, high capacity clustered storage extension product, the EX 6000 contains 6 Terabytes of SATA-II disk capacity in a 2U form factor and utilizes state-of-the-art Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) technology to connect to each Isilon IQ 6000 platform node. By leveraging Isilon's new OneFS 4.0 with TrueScale(TM) and SAS, the combined products create a high-density offering that modularly scales from 60 to hundreds of Terabytes in a single unified cluster and single file system. This solution integrates seamlessly within existing enterprise network infrastructures, communicates using standard NAS file sharing protocols over Gigabit Ethernet, and serves as an ideal multi-tier storage solution for near-line archive, disk-to-disk backup and restore, as well as remote disaster recovery applications.

o Near-line Archiving -- Using Isilon IQ 6000 paired with the EX 6000, large scale and less frequently accessed information can be seamlessly moved to an economical and highly available secondary tier of disk-based storage that enables businesses to lower total storage costs while providing instantaneous access to important information, including CAD/CAM designs, check images, historical documents, medical images, video, audio, photographs, electronic documents, presentations, e-mail attachments and more.
o Disk-to-Disk Backup and Restore -- Consolidation of backup information onto an Isilon IQ 6000 with EX 6000 cluster significantly reduces backup windows, restore times and restore failures commonly found with traditional tape-based backup systems.
o Remote Disaster Recovery -- When combined with Isilon's SyncIQ(TM) replication software, Isilon IQ 6000 with EX 6000 cluster serves as a superior business continuance storage solution; ensuring enterprise information is online and accessible in the event of a disaster.

Leading Isilon customers across a broad range of industries are already experiencing the business benefits of Isilon's newest clustered storage product:

"As the leading online digital photo developing service, we provide millions of consumers with a secure and easy way to view, store, and share billions of photos with friends and family," said Sonja Erickson, VP of Technical Operations for Kodak EasyShare Gallery. "Our 120 Terabyte Isilon IQ 6000 and EX 6000 cluster is an ideal solution for the massive volume of data that we need to economically and reliably keep online 24x7x365."

"The latest technologies for prostate cancer research create huge volumes of sample data; our analysis of a single drop of blood generates more than 60GB of information," said Dr. Parag Mallick, Director of Clinical Proteomics at the Cedars-Sinai's Louis Warschaw Prostate Cancer Center and Center for Applied Molecular Medicine. "The Isilon IQ 6000 and EX 6000 cluster we've deployed is a critical technology advance that we expect will enable us to cross-correlate huge amounts of research data and perform complex analyses to achieve more effective and truly personalized methods of prostate cancer treatment for our patients."

The EX 6000 joins Isilon's award-winning IQ family of clustered storage systems -- the Isilon IQ 1920, 3000, 4800, 6000 and Accelerator -- which are powered by Isilon's OneFS 4.0 distributed file system software, is available immediately and is list priced at $4,000 per Terabyte for a complete solution.
