Backup-to-Disk Innovations and Expanded Application Coverage in EMC Legato NetWorker Help Customers Speed Recovery and Reduce Complexity within Backup and Recovery
HOPKINTON, Mass., Jan. 31 -- EMC Corporation, the world leader in information storage and management, continues to strengthen its technology leadership position in data protection with the latest EMC Legato NetWorker software enhancements. Enhanced backup-to-disk capabilities, improved usability and expanded application integration top the list of new features in Legato NetWorker, helping customers further reduce complexity, speed recovery and increase reliability within their data protection environments.
The Canadian Space Agency looks forward to the new features of EMC Legato NetWorker. With Canada being the third country in space, the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) has a long tradition in space-based atmospheric and environmental research. A number of technology vendors are embracing and applauding the latest release of Legato NetWorker -- including ADIC, Fujitsu Siemens Computers, Nexsan, Quantum, SGI and Sun.
As the co-developer of the Network Data Management Protocol (NDMP) industry standard, EMC continues to raise the bar by offering backup to disk of NAS devices to any disk subsystem supported by Legato NetWorker. For the first time, NDMP streams can now be multiplexed, cloned and staged to/from disk for increased data protection. In the past, backup via NDMP could only be performed to/from tape. As a result, organizations can now receive greater speed and reliability for backup of Network Attached Storage (NAS) devices, freeing customers from tape-centric processes for operational backup and restore to disk.

Legato NetWorker expands application coverage in this release with the introduction of the NetWorker Module for Documentum and extended support for VMware. The NetWorker Module for Documentum ensures data consistency protection of critical Documentum assets and components, and is the only backup and recovery solution to disk or tape for Documentum.
In addition, the updated software allows for granular backup and recovery of all files within the virtual machines for VMware GSX Server and VMware ESX Server. Legato NetWorker continues to provide VMware servers with the backup and recovery software, offering application protection for Exchange, SQL and Oracle virtual servers, in or out of a Storage Area Network (SAN).
Legato NetWorker reduces complexity and improves end-user work flow by utilizing the new look and feel of the Windows client administration graphical user interface (GUI), and the introduction of installation and device configuration wizards. Similar updates can be expected in the NetWorker Modules for specific applications.
