Maxwell Introduces Only Space-Qualified Quad Multiplying Digital-To-Analog Data Converter

Ideal for Process-Controlled Systems, Multi-Channel Architectures & Systems Requiring Data Access for Self-Diagnostics

SAN DIEGO, CA -- Maxwell Technologies, Inc. today announced the release of its new space-qualified, quad multiplying digital-to-analog converter (DAC) - the only one available on the market today. The 8408 is a monolithic, quad 8-bit multiplying DAC CMOS converter, based on Analog Devices' 8408 product, with four separate DACs, each with its own reference input and on-board data latches. Data loading into the 8408 is similar to the write cycle utilized in RAM.

"Besides the advantage of being the first and only space-qualified converter product of its kind available, the 8408 represents a continuation of our line of leading-edge space technologies driven by our new product strategy of guaranteed performance, guaranteed radiation tolerance, and guaranteed life-of-the-application availability," states Rich Balanson, President of Maxwell Technologies.

Common TTL/CMOS inputs, coupled with compatibility with most 8-bit microprocessors such as 6800, 8080, 8085, and Z80, provides Maxwell's 8408 enhanced flexibility, making possible its use in a wide range of space applications and designs.

"The 8408 features a read/write function that serves as an accessible memory location for systems that may require self-diagnostics," states Chad Thibodeau, Product Manager for Maxwell Technologies. "Additionally, the 8408 has excellent endpoint linearity of +/- ¼ LSB, making it an ideal solution for applications requiring high accuracy," Thibodeau continues.

Ideal for both audio decoding and process control, the 8408 compliments Maxwell's existing portfolio of converter products, and builds upon the company's commitment to supplying the space industry with the highest technology products. As multichannel processing becomes increasingly critical in satellite applications, Maxwell's 8408 provides a low power, highly accurate solution. Maxwell prides itself in offering this one-of-a-kind converter to the space market, and will continue to search out the most advanced commercial die to bridge the technology gap between commercial and space electronics.

Maxwell Technologies manufactures and markets high-reliability power and computing components and systems and automated test instruments. The company's microelectronic products include power modules, integrated circuits and single board computers that combine commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) components and Maxwell's proprietary radiation mitigation technology to provide optimal performance and reliability in aerospace, military and other applications. Maxwell's PowerCache(TM) ultracapacitors are high-density energy storage cells that deliver bursts of high power on demand in applications such as automotive electrical systems and power trains, wireless communications and consumer and industrial electronic devices. The company's instrument products include automated accelerated reliability test systems (AARTS) for RF and photonic components.
