Dana Accelerates Into CONEXPO/CON-AGG with Full Line of Drivetrain Solutions for Global Construction Industry

LAS VEGAS - This week at CONEXPO/CON-AGG, Dana Holding Corporation (NYSE: DAN) will present a wide range of innovations for the global construction market that increase productivity, reduce fuel consumption and emissions, lower maintenance costs, and ultimately maximize the long-term return on investment for equipment buyers.

Located in booth 85114 in the South Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center, Dana will showcase numerous drivetrain products and solutions for manufacturers of construction equipment, including:

-  a 23-ton (21-tonne) drivetrain system for front-end loaders that illustrates the company's ability to meet a full range of market needs from value-driven solutions to premium configurations with advanced technologies;

-  the Spicer® PowerBoost™ hydraulic-hybrid system for the off-highway market;

-  the R2 Hydromechanical Variable Transmission (HVT) from Dana Rexroth for select off-highway applications requiring 180 to 260 hp (135 to 195 kW) of engine output power;

-  Spicer® central tire inflation system (CTIS) options for on- and off-highway construction vehicles that offer enhanced maneuverability and reduce fuel consumption;

-  next generation Victocor™ 500 cylinder-head gaskets, featuring multi-layer steel (MLS) inserts that meet extreme durability, high-stress, and pressure requirements; and superior drivetrain replacement parts and service under the Spicer brand umbrella.

"As global indicators and forecasts for the construction industry show promising signs of rejuvenation, we have strategically positioned Dana to be a single source that manufacturers of construction equipment can rely upon for engineering expertise, numerous drivetrain options for any application, and service and support in the aftermarket," said Aziz Aghili, president of Dana Off-Highway Driveline Technologies.  "We have bolstered every touch point we have in the construction business, and our leadership will be evident throughout our booth at CONEXPO/CON-AGG this year."

23-ton (21-tonne) Front-End Loader System

Dana will exhibit a front-end loader drivetrain solution with the new Spicer® TE18 powershift transmission alongside the latest hydromechanical variable transmission (HVT) from Dana Rexroth Transmission Systems, the 50-50 joint venture between Dana Holding Corporation and Bosch Rexroth AG.  Dana will also present upgraded Spicer® 37R and Spicer® 43R axles and a Spicer Wing™ Series driveshaft.

The display demonstrates Dana's ability to deliver system flexibility that enables machine designers to configure a series of vehicles in a single power range with a variety of features, from basic to advanced, while requiring a minimum of alterations to the design envelope.

The new Spicer TE18 powershift transmission is specially engineered to supply front-end loaders with higher input power capability, reduced maintenance, and smoother, quieter operation.  Rated from 200 to 260 hp (150 to 195 kW), the TE18 is a four-speed transmission platform that uses internal components from Dana's field-proven line of powershift transmissions already available for the off-highway market.  It provides superior shift quality through high energy-capacity forward and reverse clutches, adaptive clutch modulation, and helical gears.

Spicer® PowerBoost™ Hydraulic-Hybrid System

After conducting more than 1,000 hours of field testing on a 17.5-ton (16-tonne) front-end loader using the Spicer PowerBoost system, Dana last month launched field tests of a telescopic boom handler powered by an 111 hp (83 kW) engine that has also been equipped with Dana's pioneering hydraulic-hybrid technology.

Deployed through series or parallel hybrid configurations that fit into existing vehicle designs with minimal adaptation, the Spicer PowerBoost solution supplements all types of transmission architectures.

It captures kinetic energy otherwise wasted throughout the drivetrain and working hydraulics, and then uses this recuperated energy to help power the vehicle, which can reduce fuel consumption by 20 to 40 percent compared with conventional drivetrain concepts, depending on vocational application and duty cycle.

Dana Rexroth's R2 Hydromechanical Variable Transmission (HVT)

Currently undergoing bench testing in the final validation stage of development, Dana Rexroth's R2 HVT is expected to enter field testing across a wide spectrum of market vehicles by the end of the year, with production slated to begin within the next 12 months, depending on OEM adoption.

The R2 is a modular platform that delivers a full suite of configuration options and software controls, such as direct or remote mounting, flexibility in shift control and drive strategy parameters, and the deployment of up to three power takeoff units.

Initial tests on front end loaders with Dana Rexroth HVT powersplit systems demonstrate fuel savings in the drivetrain of up to 25 percent when compared with the same vehicle outfitted with a conventional torque converter transmission.

Spicer® Central Tire Inflation System (CTIS)

Based on two decades of product development and field-proven by thousands of military vehicles in operation today, the Spicer CTIS maximizes mobility by adjusting tire pressure to provide the optimum tire footprint on any given terrain.

Ideal for both on- and off-highway construction vehicles, the system enhances productivity in off-highway operating environments through optimized traction, leak detection, and reduced ground compaction.  It also extends tire life, improves fuel economy, and increases vehicle stability during on-road transport.  The technology allows operators to control tire pressures, making it possible to free a stuck vehicle or negotiate grades and other extreme conditions such as mud, sand, snow or unstable ground.

Victocor™ 500 Cylinder-Head Gaskets

Designed with multi-layer steel (MLS) inserts, the new Victocor 500 gasket takes sealing to the next level, helping heavy-duty engines achieve one million miles by meeting extreme durability, high-stress, and pressure requirements for over-the-road hauling.

This new generation of reliable, high-performance Victor Reinz® cylinder-head gaskets utilizes high-grade rubber-coated stainless steel in place of traditional rubber inserts to provide optimal sealing performance at oil and coolant passages, as well as pushrod openings.

To enhance stability and provide for superior radial strength of the combustion seals, the Victocor 500 gasket incorporates a steel core that is three times thicker than conventional head gaskets. Additionally, the MLS inserts are available in three to five layers specifically matched to the engine load distribution and dynamics to optimize sealing. This patented technology provides improved longevity, as well as long-term recovery over time, resulting in less maintenance due to oil leak avoidance.
