Czech Post Electronic Signature Services Go Live Using Cybertrust Application as Foundation

Cybertrust UniCERT underpins new Czech e-Signature initiatives

LONDON, Dec. 7 /- Cybertrust(R), the global information security specialist, today announced the successful implementation of electronic signature services by Czech Post, the Czech Republic's biggest postal service supplier. Czech Post is now one of only three accredited distributors of official digital certificates in the Czech Republic. The electronic signature services will be used by citizens of the Czech Republic to safely and securely handle tax declarations, pensions, insurance policies, legal and social security documents online.

Using Cybertrust's UniCERT(R) public key infrastructure (PKI) software, the Czech Post is capable of large scale generation, issuing and revocation of digital certificates. UniCERT is used to manage all of the keys necessary for transaction security for end users, such as online submission of tax declarations or legal documents, to establish the security, identity and trust required to facilitate e-business. The solution was customised and delivered locally by Cybertrust's network solutions partners, ICZ.

UniCERT provides a comprehensive trust environment for any electronic communication or transaction by leveraging public key cryptography in an enterprise or community-wide security infrastructure that is virtually transparent to the end user. Customers such as Czech Post benefit through lower administrative costs, a business security policy that maps to business practices, an open interface to third-party products, and a minimized risk due to security breaches. In addition, UniCERT easily evolves to meet changing requirements such as the integration of new applications, addition of new users, interoperability with partner organizations and changes in organizational structure.

Pavel Plachy, project manager at Czech Post, commented: "Users will be able to generate a unique, personalised private key to be stored on their computers and use it to create an electronic signature in compliance with a certification policy. The public key, provided in the form of a certificate and made available to anyone, will be used to verify the authenticity of the signature. All changes in the electronically signed document will be easily identifiable."

He added, "Working with Cybertrust enabled us to deliver a timely and cost-effective solution for our citizens through issuing qualified certificates that can be used for communicating with the state administration according to Czech law on issues such as tax declarations."

"Cybertrust is delighted to be an integral part of this leading-edge communications initiative for the Czech Post," said John Holland, Cybertrust senior vice president and general manager, EMEA. "Citizens of the Czech Republic will experience the highest levels of security controls and service capabilities as they conduct these online interactions."

Czech Post will sell electronic signature certificates for 190 Czech Koruny (approximately 4 British Pounds), which makes the service affordable for private citizens to use, as well as businesses and government departments. Czech Post will also sell a certificate for applications for the purpose of automatic electronic signature verification for 2856 Czech Koruny (approximately 66 British Pounds). The certificates are currently only sold through main Czech Post offices but planned to be available countrywide by 2007.
