Current Sense Metal Element Resistors offer ratings to 3 W.

Press Release Summary:

Surface-mount chip resistors of ULR Series feature Inductance and TCR values, along with power rating, that promote optimal thermal performance and minimized power consumption in circuit designs. RoHS-compliant products suit high-volume, high-current power electronics applications involving current detection and monitoring. Specifications include power ratings of 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, and 3 W at 80°C; resistance from 0.5-10 mW; tolerances of ±1% and ±5%; and TCRs as low as ±50 ppm/°C.

IRC's Current Sense Metal Element Resistors Rated for 3W at 80°C

Low inductance, tight TCR values enable resistors to minimize power consumption...

AUSTIN, TX (February 26, 2008) -- Providing design engineers with an economical surface mount current sense device designed to maximize thermal performance and minimize power consumption, TT electronics IRC offers their metal element chip resistors for high volume, high current power electronics applications. Designated the ULR Series, the RoHS-compliant surface mount metal element resistors feature tight TCRs and low inductance values.

According to Bryan Yarborough, applications engineers for IRC, the ULR Series resistors are ideal for applications involving current detection and monitoring. "The low inductance and TCR values, along with the higher power rating, allows power consumption in circuit designs to be minimized," said Yarborough. "With a small footprint and surface mount design, the economical resistors require much less board space than a comparably rated wirewound, making them suitable for densely-packed applications such as voltage regulation modules, power supplies, DC-DC converters, and electric motor control devices."

The ULR Series resistors are available in 1206, 2010 and 2512 package sizes and feature power ratings of 1W, 1.5W, 2W, 2.5W and 3W at 80°C. Resistance range is from 0.5m? to 10m?, with standard tolerances of ±1% and ±5% and TCRs as low as ±50ppm/°C, depending on power rating and resistance value. Operating temperature ranges from -55°C to +170°C. IRC will also produce devices outside these specifications to meet customer requirements.

The ULR Series resistors are available in two versions, indicated by a black or green protective coating. Both types feature plated terminations that, in contrast to comparable components with copper terminals, streamline production and eliminate TCR degradation. The black-coated resistors (1W, 2W) are equipped with a low resistance alloy plate. The green-coated resistors (1W, 1.5W, 2W, 2.5W, 3W) feature a printed circuit board "clearance gap" in order to maximize thermal performance and keep the resistor's "hot spot" off the PC board.

Typical pricing for the ULR Series resistors is approximately $0.14 each in quantities of 100,000 pieces. Lead time is from stock to 6 weeks.
