Rugged PCI-104 CPU Breaks the 1 GHz Barrier

Ampro Tackles Extreme Vibration, Temperature, and Corrosion for the Smallest Applications SAN JOSE, Calif., April 2 /- Ampro Computers, Inc., a leading supplier of standards-based computer systems, single board computers (SBCs), and computer-on-modules (COMs), shatters the previously-impenetrable 1 GHz barrier for rugged PC/104-size modules while remaining true to form factor standards. In order for military, avionics, transportation, and industrial system manufacturers to leverage existing enclosures while upgrading performance, Ampro's new 1 GHz CoreModule(TM) 800 achieved a number of technological breakthroughs in fitting a complete CPU subsystem with I/O, PCI- 104 bus expansion, and network interfaces without violating the required 3.550" x 3.750" (90 x 96 mm) board outline. Featuring the 1 GHz Intel® Celeron® M 373 processor from -40 degrees to +85 degrees C without a CPU cooling fan on a 0.120" thick PCB with optional conformal coating, CoreModule 800 defines "rugged" for applications that insist on the highest reliability available within the most confined spaces and harshest environments where failures are not tolerated. "The rugged design heritage at Ampro has created a masterpiece in the CoreModule 800," said Joanne Mumola Williams, president and CEO of Ampro. "Whether operating under an aircraft wing, attached to the side of a locomotive, or mounted behind the display of a military tank, the CoreModule 800 is the next in a long line of rugged PC/104 CPUs that system OEMs and integrators have relied upon since Ampro invented the stackable PC/104 CPU in 1991." The 1 GHz CoreModule 800 joins the existing 800 MHz Celeron M configuration to give developers a choice of performance, power consumption, and price points that best suit a particular application. Up to 1 GB of DDR 333 RAM is supported, along with (2) RS-232/422/485 serial ports, (2) USB 2.0 ports, Intel® 82541 Gigabit Ethernet, integrated graphics with LVDS LCD support, IDE, a shared parallel / floppy port, PS/2 keyboard and mouse interface, and AMI BIOS. Bus expansion is provided by the standard PCI-104 connector (PCI bus). For use with off-the-shelf PC/104 (ISA bus) modules, Ampro offers MiniModule(TM) ISA, which contains a PCI-to-ISA bridge. For product information, please visit the CoreModule 800 (http://www.ampro.com/Products/CoreModules/CoreModule_800/index.htm) product page on Ampro's Web site. QuickStart Kits for these products include cables, I/O board with PC-style connectors, 512MB DDR RAM, plus device drivers and Board Support Packages (BSPs) for Windows® XP, Windows XP Embedded, Windows CE, QNX®, VxWorks® and a full Linux® 2.6 distribution. The PCI-104 specification is managed by the PC/104 Consortium (http://www.pc104.org/). Pricing and Availability The 1 GHz CoreModule 800 PCI-104 module is available within 30 days. Prices for the 800 MHz and 1 GHz models range from $800's to $1,000's in production quantities.
