Original Press Release:

New VMP2 POWERPC CPU from Kontron Features Number-Crunching Performance In Space-Saving Package

San Diego, CA, July 31, 2002 -- Kontron, formerly PEP Modular Computers, a leading manufacturer of 3U and 6U low power, high performance CompactPCI and VME single-board computers (SBCs) and systems, has introduced the VMP2, a VME processor board based on Motorola's MPC8245 PowerPC microprocessor.

The new VMP2, intended for number-crunching applications in space-limited industrial environments, features the MPC8245 Kahlua II, a highly integrated microprocessor with a PowerPC MPC603e core, operating at 330 MHz. The new 3U board delivers 450 Mips of performance (Dhrystone 2.1) while drawing only an average 5.8 W of power.

To support its data-intensive capabilities, the VMP2 incorporates direct soldered 64-bit, 133 MHz SDRAM (up to 256 MB) featuring a selectable in-line ECC controller, providing
single bit error correct or double bit error detect. A dual channel programmable DMA controller provides a range of mass data transmission options (PCI to memory, memory to PCI, memory to memory, PCI to PCI).

The new board, a high-performance addition to the line of space-saving 3U VME CPUs offered by Kontron, features a PCI Expansion Interface accommodating up to two stackable expansion modules, providing one/two PMC slots in an 8HP/12HP format.

The VMP2 is designed for connectivity, with a 10/100 Mbps Fast Ethernet controller, one full modem RS232 serial port, and one configurable RS232/485 port with optional opto isolation.

The new board features an OS-independent Universal Boot Loader enabling fast, automated loading of any operating system from flash memory (direct soldered, up to 8 MB). Support is provided for VxWorks and OS-9.

The VMP2 is available in an extended temperature version (-40°C to +85°C; -40°F to 185°F). Pricing for the new board starts at $2,112. Delivery is 6-8 weeks ARO.
