Original Press Release:

ePCI-201: Kontron's PICMG 1.2 Compatible, Full-size Slot CPU Assembly with Intel® Pentium® 4 With up to 3.0 GHz and PCI-X Performance

Eching, May 2, 2005 - With the ePCI-201, Kontron introduces a new PICMG 1.2 compatible full-size slot CPU assembly which is equipped with Intel® Pentium® 4 processors with up to 3.0 GHz and communicates with expansion assemblies via the backplane with up to 64 bit / 66 MHz. It is designed for high-performance and I/O-intensive application fields where up to 6 PCI(-X)-based expansion assemblies may be used. But even without expansion assemblies, the CPU assembly offers a comprehensive set of features that can be enhanced even further using the optional mezzanine card. The ePCI-201 is especially suitable for applications that require fast RAM access, CPUs and peripheral buses, like multimedia, image recognition, medical technology, or telecommunications applications such as VoIP or HLR/SCP (Home Location Register/Service Control Point).

The standard feature set includes a front-side bus up to 800 MHz, dual channel DDR RAM, two serial ATA interfaces, on-board ATI® Mobility Radeon M7 video controller, two Gigabit Ethernet ports, as well as 64 bit / 66 MHz PCI bus support. Furthermore, the ePCI955 offers an EIDE hard drive interface, a Compact Flash module connector, four USB 2.0 ports, two serial interfaces, floppy disk controller and its own controller for monitoring the board functions. Moreover, the additional mezzanine card offers two more USB 2.0 ports, a composite video input and a second VGA interface for parallel operation of two monitors.

Software support is offered for Windows 2000/XP and Linux.

The PICMG 1.2 compatible, full-size slot CPU assembly ePCI-201 will be available from mid-April and offered at OEM volumes from Euros 259 (two hundred fifty-nine).

About ePCI-X - pure and faster PCI for embedded systems
The ePCI-X (PICMG 1.2) specifications offer a 'pure' PCI solution which allows the simultaneous use of PCI and PCI-X in embedded systems. Building on the PCI/ISA form factor, PICMG has specified two boards: first, a half-size single-bus board with a PCI-X bus, which resembles the half-size ISA SBCs and allows up to three expansion assemblies via passive backplane. This is used primarily when space is the critical factor. Second is a full-size single or dual bus board with one or two PCI and/or PCI-X buses for I/O-intensive applications. This enables passive backplanes with up to eight slots. The ePCI-201 is such a board and offers both PCI-X with 64 bit and 33 MHz to 66 MHz, and PCI with 32 bit / 33 MHz. Because it remains compatible with desktop PCI, solution providers can draw on cost-effective, standard mass-market PCI products. As an evolutionary development of the PCI/ISA standard, PICMG 1.2 boards are mechanically compatible with the ISA chassis, allowing existing PCI/ISA products to migrate to the new components with the new bus combination without difficulty.
