COLDFRONT Products Lower Cooling Cost and Increases Availability of Data Centers, Central Offices and Communication Centers

Milford, N.H. - April 28, 2005

Degree Controls,Inc. (degreeC), a leading designer of airflow and thermal solutions is pleased to announce the COLDFRONT product line for thermal management of data centers, central offices, and communication centers. COLDFRONT consists of 3 products that can be used together or independently from one another. The 3 COLDFRONT products include thermal analysis and design to optimize data center cooling, COLDFRONT NODE temperature data acquisition system, and COLDFRONT TILE, a fan-assisted perforated floor tile.

Using computer simulation to understand the thermal and airflow behavior of the data room, cooling needs at different locations in the room are evaluated. This study also provides the ideal locations for the placement of sensors for monitoring temperatures. Using COLDFRONT NODE, multiple temperature sensors are located throughout the room. COLDFRONT TILEs are placed at critical locations on the raised floor. COLDFRONT THERMAL SERVER, a thermal management software running on a PC, communicates with NODEs to read the temperature measured by them and commands TILEs to operate at different speeds as required by the thermal needs.

One-third of energy in a data center is used for cooling. COLDFRONT can reduce these costs by 10-15% by reducing the mixing of air between hot and cold aisles. Less airflow is required, thus reducing energy consumption as well as increasing the life of the fans. Furthermore, better thermal management of the data center reduces potential downtime of equipment due to overheating. COLDFRONT also automatically adapts to changing heat loads to prevent costly shutdowns.

COLDRONT TILE and NODE connect together on a network to monitor temperature at critical locations in the room, identify potential overheating before failures occur, and automatically increase airflow as temperature changes. The managed airflow delivery of COLDFRONT reduces power consumption and increases fan life, as fans are run at the minimum required speed. Various configurations are available depending on airflow and room size requirements.

DegreeC is a private ISO 9001 registered company founded in 1997 specializing in solving thermal and airflow issues in telecommunications, electronics equipment, medical equipment and critical containment enclosures.
