SynQor Introduces Eighth-brick DC/DC Converter

Delivers 15 Amps in industry's newest standard package size

Hudson, Mass - SynQor, the technology leader in dc/dc converters, has introduced an Eighth-brick sized isolated dc/dc converter. The PowerQor® Mega series Eighth-brick can deliver up to 15 amps of total output current at 3.3V and below and 50W at 5V and above, without a heatsink. The Mega eighth-brick series also offers a very low profile and retains the same pin out as the industry standard quarter-brick.

The EML series has a 48V nominal input (35V to 75V range) and meets input voltage transient requirements up to 100V for 100ms. Employing the newly established industry standard eighth-brick footprint and pin out, the unit measures 0.9" x 2.3" x 0.37", (22.9 x 58.4 x 9.5mm). The eighth-brick converters occupy only 60% of the board space of a standard quarter-brick, yet their ultra high efficiency results in the ability to deliver full power up to 70°C with no airflow (2.5V and below). The EML eighth-brick converter series will initially be offered at 3.3V, 2.5V, 1.8V, and 1.5V with additional output voltages of 1.2V and 5V being released shortly. The EML series is currently offered with through-hole mounting and will also be available in a surface mount configuration in Q4 2002.

SynQor's 15 amp Mega Eighth-brick series provides an economical solution for applications needing lower current and power levels, providing typical quarter-brick outputs in 40% less board space. Since the EML series is pin-for-pin compatible with larger quarter-bricks, they can offer immediate cost reductions and board savings when replacing larger bricks. The Eighth-brick series complements SynQor's existing broad line of 15-40 amp Quarter-bricks and 20-60 amp Half-bricks to provide the widest and most scalable product offering for high-efficiency, no-heatsink dc/dc converters.

"Our new Eighth-brick series expands SynQor's leading product offerings in the high-efficiency brick market to satisfy a wide range of power requirements", says Dr. Martin F. Schlecht, SynQor CEO. "Customers are searching for an array of industry-standard, distributed power solutions and SynQor is providing them with products to meet their individual needs for performance, price and functionality".

The EML converter includes a full complement of control and protection features such as on/off control, voltage trim, remote sense, short circuit, output OVP, thermal shutdown and 2000Vdc isolation rating. These features allow advanced functionality, while standard safety certifications allow easy integration into the end user's product.

Sample quantities of the 3.3, 2.5V, 1.8V and 1.5V EML eighth-brick converters are available immediately and production volume shipments will begin in November 2002 directly from SynQor and through their network of distributors. The modules are priced at $42.50 in OEM quantities. Sample quantities for additional output voltages of 1.2V and 5V will be available in December 2002.
