SchemaLogic Delivers First Business Semantics Management Solution for Media and Publishing Enterprises

KIRKLAND, Wash., July 16 -- SchemaLogic, the leading provider of Business Semantics Management solutions for Global 5000 enterprises, today announced the release of its Business Semantics Management software specifically designed for media and publishing enterprises. Notable SchemaLogic customers in this market include the Associated Press (AP), Corbis, Reed Business International, and the International Press and Telecommunication Council (IPTC) among others. See today's joint press release, "Associated Press Leads New Generation of News Delivery by Choosing SchemaLogic."

In order to accelerate its leading position in this market, SchemaLogic also announced today that it has completed its Series C round of financing which raised $12.7 million in additional funds (see today's press release, "SchemaLogic Raises $12.7 Million in Series C Funding"). This funding, led by Goldman Sachs, will enable SchemaLogic to bolster efforts within the media and publishing vertical market as well as other focused vertical markets including oil & gas, government, and life sciences.

"Given the myriad of free content across the web, it is no secret that the media and publishing market has gone through a tremendous transformation over the past decade," said Jeff Dirks, president and CEO of SchemaLogic. "These leading organizations know they need to optimize their information syndication services and aggressively take a hard look at subscription revenues. Through the use of enterprise-wide Business Semantics Management solutions, they are able to aggressively compete with the multitude of open source content providers which ultimately results in accelerated revenue."

Using Business Semantics Management to Create New Business Opportunities

It is a common problem -- many different vocabularies are used across the media and publishing enterprise to describe many types of digital content -- text, video, audio, photographs, and more. One person might use one term to describe a piece of content, while another person may use an entirely different term. The amount of content that exists for any one publishing and media company is massive, and the tags used to describe each piece of content are numerous and hard to track. In order to completely access and deliver the full value of their content libraries, publishing companies must find a way to consistently "tag" each piece of digital content. In addition, if a publisher wants to provide content specific services (i.e., all about the Olympics, Tiger Woods, the Semantic Web, etc.), they need to find a way to rapidly define new content streams within existing tagging libraries.

Corbis is using the SchemaLogic Enterprise Suite to manage the semantics used to describe the company's growing digital images, illustrations and videos. "The SchemaLogic solution, which helps us manage our Cataloging vocabulary, translates directly into an improved customer search experience," said Stephen Gillett, VP, Technology for Corbis. "To remain competitive, we need comprehensive, targeted, and accurate search results. We need a business semantics management solution to provide valuable services to our customers, and SchemaLogic's proven solution is the best one out there."

SchemaLogic provides a solution for customers to implement a collaborative process that enables writers, photographers, and editors to participate in the development and enrichment of the underlying "content tags" that describe information in a dynamic, ever-changing environment -- and they do not have to change the way they use their own terminology. Content tagging is an advanced method of identifying and labeling information assets including audio, video, news stories, and other web content using text descriptions. SchemaLogic's software manages the definition and relationships between content tags so that each individual in each department can continue to work in a way that makes sense for them, while the semantic differences are resolved by the technology.

SchemaLogic delivers this solution for media and publishing customers based on their proven SchemaLogic Enterprise Suite. Publishers of all types of content are now able to access the full value of their content repositories, and also design new, highly relevant content streams to bring new products to market more rapidly.

"The digital publishing marketplace is growing five to six times as fast as the overall economy, creating huge opportunities for businesses. With more than 70% of Americans using the Internet on a daily basis, businesses must understand how to effectively use the online medium to reach and engage their customers, partners, and employees," said Karsten Weide, IDC's program director of Digital Media and Entertainment.

SchemaLogic is working with a multitude of other enterprises and will announce customers in additional vertical markets including oil & gas, government, and life sciences.
