Connector provides Serial ATA II backplane interface.

Press Release Summary:

Metral® 4000 connectors link I/O controller modules and Serial ATA (SATA) disk backplanes in servers and enterprise storage enclosures. They support power, communication and control signals, and differential signals for up to 16 SATA ports. Products also accommodate initial SATA serial data transmission rates of 1.5 Gbps and anticipate next generation, high-speed signaling at 3 Gbps. Receptacles and headers feature press-fit tails for 0.6 mm dia drilled holes.

FCI's Metral® 4000 Connectors Provide High-Speed Serial ATA II Backplane Interface

Connector meets SATA serial data transmission rates of 1.5 Gbps and supports next generation high-speed signaling...

ETTERS, PA (June 15, 2004) - Metral® 4000 high-speed backplane connectors from FCI® enable connections between I/O controller modules and Serial ATA (SATA) disk backplanes in servers and enterprise storage enclosures. Use of the connectors described in the Serial ATA II specification help define interoperability between I/O modules from one manufacturer and backplanes from another manufacturer. Power, communication and control signals, and differential signals for up to 16 SATA ports can be supported by the Metral 4000 connector. The connectors accommodate initial SATA serial data transmission rates of 1.5 Gbps and anticipate next generation, high-speed, signaling at 3 Gbps.

FCI part number 52057-102 designates a 30-position, right angle Metral 4000 receptacle and is used on the I/O controller board. The receptacle's contact geometry is optimized to match 100-ohm impedance for differential signal pairs. Insertion loss is less than 1.0dB at 5Gbps. The corresponding connector at the backplane interface is a vertical Metral header, FCI part number 59566-1001. The header features three levels of staggered pin lengths to provide sequential mating of ground, power, and signals to facilitate hot-swap of controller boards.

Metral 4000 receptacles and headers feature press-fit tails for reliable attachment to circuit boards without soldering. The press-fit section is designed for 0.6mm-diameter drilled holes, which provide additional room to route board traces and lower capacitance for via holes. The connectors are designed to conveniently stack end-to-end.

Typical pricing is $0.13 per mated contact pair for minimum order quantities. Samples are available for delivery, with lead times from stock to 8- 10 weeks.
