PFU Leads with Plug-N-Run(TM) G4 COM Express Portfolio Based on Intel® Processors and Chipsets for Embedded Applications

PFU's Plug-N-Run(TM) G4 modules give OEMs a lead in reaping the benefits of the PICMG COM Express open standard for Computer-on-Modules.

Intel Developer Forum, San Francisco, California (USA) - March 1, 2005 - PFU Ltd, a Fujitsu group company, announced today its 4th generation Plug-N-Run(TM) modules, the Plug-N-Run(TM) G4X and G4B families of products for embedded applications, compliant with the COM Express standard for Extended and Basic Form Factor modules, respectively. The Plug-N-Run G4X and G4B use Intel® Pentium® M and Celeron® M processors and the Mobile Intel® 915GM Express chipset. PFU is among the first to launch products based on this new standard for embedded computing and is an original sponsor of the COM Express PICMG standard.

"PFU is an avid proponent of the COM Express standard and, as a sponsor of the standard, is committed to its success," said Hirotake Shinde, director engineering computer products group of PFU Ltd. "This success comes from trust and trust comes from product reliability, consistent quality and longevity - three attributes that form the basis of PFU's product philosophy and the foundation upon which the embedded industry is based. PFU's COM Express compliant Plug-N-Run G4X and G4B products embody these very same attributes. COM Express is a solid standard, backed by solid products from PFU."

"The Intel® Pentium® M and Celeron® M processors and the Mobile Intel® 915GM Express chipset are built on industry standards and are therefore a natural choice for products that need to be compliant with the COM Express PICMG standard," said Doug Davis, vice president, Digital Enterprise Group, general manager, Infrastructure Processor Division, Intel Corporation. "With the Plug-N-Run G4, PFU is bringing to market the latest Intel technology in COM Express compliant products, to further drive innovation in the embedded industry."

Plug-N-Run G4X and G4B modules help OEMs respond quickly to changing customer needs in local markets and to the trend of product individualization in global markets - key factors that drive innovation in product design and that increasingly define success across industries, including the embedded industry.

"The Plug-N-Run G4 provide OEMs with a broad choice of COM Express modules for a wide range of applications," said Kishan Jainandunsing, vice president technology and business development of PFU Systems, Inc., US subsidiary of PFU Ltd. "The Plug-N-Run G4X is optimized for the dual channel memory architecture on the Mobile Intel® 915GM Express chipset, and the Plug-N-Run G4B is optimized for small footprints. OEMs can design their systems so that these module families are fully interchangeable."

About the COM Express Standard

COM Express is a PICMG standard for Computer-on-Modules, aka System-on-Modules. The standard provides OEMs a path of migration from existing divergent COM products with legacy technology, such as PCI bus and IDE, to a single standard with PCI Express and SATA technology. At the same time it provides OEMs with the option to keep the legacy PCI bus and IDE interfaces side by side with PCI Express and SATA interfaces for a smooth transition from legacy to legacy free.

The COM Express standard has been formulated with the objective to appeal to a broad set of embedded industry segments, both vertically within a segment and horizontally across segments. It has been defined to be processor and chipset agnostic, broadening its appeal even further by allowing module manufacturers to make choices that best fit applications. The standard also provides a road map for product innovation in the embedded industry through unprecedented performance and IO density, with headroom for 10Gbit/sec Ethernet and PCI Express and SATA data rate doubling in PCI Express Gen2 and SATA-300.
