Agilent Technologies introduces industry's first PCI express multi-lane receiver compliance test suite

High-performance Parallel BERT application software enables accurate compliance and characterization testing

SANTA CLARA, Calif., DesignCon, Booth 305, Feb. 6, 2006

Agilent Technologies Inc. (NYSE: A) today announced the industry's first PCI Express(r) multi-lane receiver compliance test suite. The enhanced measurement capability for the Agilent 81250 Series high-performance Parallel Bit Error Ratio Tester (ParBERT) makes it the first automated and the most accurate tool for multi-lane PCI Express receiver tolerance compliance and characterization testing.

PCI Express' advanced technology, including a multi-lane architecture, spread spectrum clock, pre-emphasis/de-emphasis and its link layer protocol mechanism, is extremely difficult to test on traditional single channel measurement equipment. At the same time, for success in an open, standards-based market, testing against a standard receiver specification in R&D labs and at compliance workshops is mandatory.

Both R&D and compliance test engineers will benefit from using the new Agilent N5991A PCI Express receiver compliance test and characterization software's features:
One-button compliance capability, which greatly simplifies the test procedure.
Compliance sweeps using the correct stimulus signal and carrying the proper amounts of calibrated stress, which reduce measurement time to the minimum possible.
Both printed and electronic versions of compliance test data, which ensure easy and accurate documentation of results.
Precise characterization of the physical signal performance, which allows margin analysis for further improvement in device-specific technology and manufacturing processes.

The Agilent PCI Express receiver compliance test suite runs on standard PCs and requires the new Agilent N5990A transmitter and receiver test automation software platform for the 81250 ParBERT. The platform provides:
A flexible test sequencer.
A configurable database interface.
A Web interface.

Interfaces for the full integration of sources for periodic jitter, random jitter and bounded uncorrelated jitter stress generation, necessary to conduct compliant and calibrated jitter tolerance measurements.

The Agilent 81250 ParBERT with the N5990A test automation software platform and N5991A PCI Express compliance test software can be further combined with the N5393A PCI Express electrical performance validation and compliance software for the Agilent Infiniium series of oscilloscopes into a complete PCI Express compliance test station.

"Through the full integration and automation of all signal sources needed, the Agilent PCI Express multi-lane receiver compliance test suite allows the most accurate device characterization and margin control," said Siegfried Gross, vice president and general manager of Agilent's Digital Verification Solutions division. "This product combination reduces time to market and creates a real competitive advantage for our customers."
