Colubris Teams with Juniper Networks to Deliver Network Admission Control for WLANs with Industry-First Edge Quarantine Capability

WALTHAM, Mass., Feb. 6 / -- Colubris Networks, the leading global provider of intelligent wireless LANs (WLANs) for enterprises and service providers, today announced the industry's first network admission control solution to enforce quarantines at the WLAN network edge, ultimately reducing the threat of intrusion. By combining the award-winning Colubris Intelligent Mobility System (CIMS) with Juniper Networks' Unified Access Control (UAC) 2.0, customers can deploy the first WLAN switching solution to fully adhere to open industry standards, which require non-conforming client traffic to be quarantined at the network edge. Juniper Networks announced Colubris as a network infrastructure partner that supports the UAC 2.0 solution today at the RSA Conference in San Francisco. (See related announcement, "Juniper Networks and Network Infrastructure Partners Drive Standards-Based Network Access Control.")

CIMS is a centrally managed WLAN system that uses distributed intelligence to enforce security policies at the WLAN edge. CIMS and the Juniper Networks UAC 2.0 solution support the 802.1X standard as a method to enforce authentication and security policies, as recommended by the Trusted Computing Group (TCG). By enforcing authentication, admission control and encryption policies at the access point, before disruptive traffic or unauthorized users can enter the wired network, the solution automatically ensures that high risk clients are quarantined and the wired network integrity is protected. This distributed intelligence significantly reduces the risks of cross-infection and intrusion posed by centralized switching architectures, which by design bring the authentication point back deep inside the wired network.

"Juniper Networks' UAC 2.0 solution allows enterprises to identify users and control admission within the network so customers can meet their security and regulatory compliance requirements," said Karthik Krishnan, product line manager at Juniper Networks. "By combining UAC 2.0 and the Colubris Intelligent Mobility System, enterprise customers get the first network admission control solution for edge containment of non-conforming traffic using open industry standards."

As a member of the Trusted Computing Group, Colubris has designed its optimized WLAN solutions to interoperate with solutions that support the TNC open specifications, providing enterprise IT managers with identity-based, real-time client visibility and policy control. CIMS enables them to audit mobile laptops and desktops for policy conformance and provide a smooth and secure mechanism for remediation without transferring the myriad of threats the devices are vulnerable to. Colubris' support for the Juniper Networks UAC solution builds on its best-in-class wireless client authentication and security. In addition to 802.1X, Colubris also supports the EAP and RADIUS standards-based authentication systems.

"The CIMS WLAN infrastructure enforces centrally defined security policies using intelligent access points, creating a strong boundary between the wired and wireless networks," said Pierre Trudeau, CTO and founder, Colubris Networks. "By adding UAC 2.0 support, customers can now leverage Colubris' edge policy enforcement to quarantine traffic before it enters the wired network."
