Cobar's Advanced Technologies Featured in the APEX Hand Solder Competition

The Balver Zinn/Cobar Group announces that its SN100C Wire Solder and Cobrush flux applicator were demonstrated at the first Hand Solder Competition at the recently held IPC APEX EXPO in San Diego.

During the two-day hand soldering competition, numerous companies competed to build a functional electronics assembly in 30 minutes. Assemblies were judged on soldering in accordance with IPC-A-610E Class 3 criteria, the speed at which the assembly was produced and overall electrical functionality of assembly. IPC-A-610E Master Instructors served as the judges.

The Balver Zinn/Cobar Group's SN100C Wire Solder and Cobrush were used as solder materials during the competition. One of the judges, Leo Lambert, Vice President of EPTAC, observed some key benefits of using Cobar's products. "Since the contestants were soldering with lead-free materials, it was interesting to hear some of their comments about how these materials performed better with the emphasis being how much shinier the joints were and how the solder flowed much better than the materials being used at home," Lambert said. "From an observer's perspective it was obvious that it was easier to inspect those solder joints. We could see the flow up through the barrels and the consistency along the surface mount components."

SN100C Lead-Free Flux Cored Solder Wire is a high-reliability flux-cored solder wire that generates minimal spatter even with the high solder tip temperatures required to burn off polyurethane insulating enamel. The SN100C alloy reduces risk of copper erosion during soldering and slow growth of the interfacial intermetallic layer in service. Additional features include low flux spattering, minimal cracking of flux residue, low fuming and odor, and cost-effective high-temperature soldering. The wire also can be used with soldering tip temperature up to 400°C. The SN100C alloy extends the solder tip life due to lack of silver and the presence of nickel.

A precise, inexpensive and handy tool for applying liquid flux to tiny chip components as well as individual solder joints, Cobrush flux applicator puts flux only where it is needed - in just the right amount - and is ideal for applying liquid no-clean fluxes to any site that needs to be soldered. It is disposable and compatible with many different types of fluxes. Its fine bristle tip allows the user to apply flux to very small areas in densely populated assemblies. This inexpensive applicator cuts down on waste and prevents overfluxing, thus reducing possible cleaning time and preventing contamination. The Cobrush's transparent cartridge allows the
user to see the amount of remaining material in the reservoir.

Its small, compact size and large capacity make it ideal for most rework and post-assembly applications. Flux is dispensed by lightly squeezing the barrel, then using the gentle applicator bristles to apply the flux, just like an artist's brush, which allows the user to control the amount of flux flow. A snug-fitting cap prevents flux evaporation in the barrel, thus extending the life and purity of the flux. Constructed of rugged polypropylene, the Cobrush features an ergonomic design for ease of use, is compact enough to fit into the top pocket of a lab coat and can easily be labeled.
