Coating suits dry machining of aluminum alloys.
Press Release Summary:
Diamond-Like Carbon Coating (DLC) features corrosion resistance and low wear rate. Inserts coated with DLC have low friction coefficient of µ=0.05-0.2, even without lubricants. Aluminum alloy adhesion on edge can be suppressed even in dry machining, thereby decreasing cutting resistance. Chips are removed well, preventing cutting material from being scratched and deterioration of machined surface caused by re-adhesion to cutting material.

Sumitomo Engineers Develop DLC Coating for Dry Aluminum Cutting
Mount Prospect, IL (September 16, 2002) - Engineers from Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd. have developed the world's first Diamond-Like Carbon Coating (DLC) for the dry machining of aluminum alloys.
Low friction coefficient and excellent performance in adhesion resistance make DLC an ideal coating for cutting tools. Previously, in the first stages of harsh-environment cutting, coatings would peel and lose their beneficial properties. Sumitomo researchers have developed a DLC coating for aluminum that effectively maintains its properties. These properties include high hardness, low friction coefficient, very smooth surface, corrosive resistance and low wear rate.
Testing results confirm that DLC has high hardness and an extremely low friction coefficient for aluminum alloy, with superior adhesion-resistance properties. Inserts coated with Sumitomo's DLC have a low friction coefficient of µ=0.05 - 0.2- even without lubricants. Aluminum alloy adhesion on the edge can be suppressed even in dry machining, thereby decreasing cutting resistance. Furthermore, generation of a build-up edge is suppressed, thereby maintaining the sharpness of the edge and improving the quality of the cutting material. Chips are removed well, preventing the cutting material from being scratched by chips and preventing deterioration of the machined surface caused by re-adhesion to the cutting material.
