Coal Fired Plant Retrofit of Endesa by ABB Spain

2007-06-26 - A full DCS retrofit for Compostilla units 4 and 5 including turbine governor

Madrid, June 26, 2007. ABB Spain was recently awarded with the contract for the Compostilla Power Plant units 4 & 5 rated 350 MW each. DCS (distributed control system) unit retrofit and FGD (Flue gas desulphurization) of both units. This is an ENDESA power plant located in the province of Leon. Both units are 350MW pulverized coal fired. Total installed power of all 5 units Compostilla is 1.312Mwatts.

By this investment the whole plant will run in automatic mode, enabling to fit better the new market regulations of the trading of energy to the market, in order to have a quick answer to the request of the National dispatch center. By having all the information under a uniform concept delivered by ABB manual supervisory tasks of the process quality are not needed any longer. The new automation will avoid spurious trips due to the aging of the old systems, and additionally using the SIL concept of security operational insurances costs will be lower apart from improving the safety and reliability.

The selected Distributed Control System for the plant control and safety systems are ABB's Symphony Harmony System and System 800xA high integrity control system. The Symphony Harmony system is used for the process control of water/steam Cycle, analog regulation, Mill Control, Balance of Plant, plant computer, turbine governor, turbine auxiliaries, flue gas desulphurization and Alarm Management. It is based in latest generation of BRC Controllers. They are high-performance, high capacity process controllers, designed to interface with Symphony Harmony block I/O in the Symphony Enterprise Management and Control System.

The ABB 800xA High Integrity system is the responsible for Burner Management (BMS) and Turbine Protection (TPL). This is a TV certified SIL2 CAT3 system for critical systems complying with the IEC 61508 and IEC 61511 standards.

The Man-Machine Interface is based on ABB Power Generation Portal(TM), that integrates the Symphony Harmony and 800xA HI platforms into a common suite of operator oriented software. This represents the most advanced full-featured information platform for plant management and control. Power Generation Portal embraces the use of context sensitive aspect menus to provide integrated information sharing, intuitive navigation, and efficient engineering. The Power Generation Portal provides an interactive human-system interface through which operations permit to take the right decision even in case of plant emergency.
