VAST XXT - A New Zeiss Scanning Solution for RDS

MAPLE GROVE, Sep 8 - Carl Zeiss Industrial Measuring Technology today introduced at IMTS '04 (Booth # D-4501) the new VAST XXT sensor, an addition to the VAST sensor line. VAST XXT offers scanning ability on Carl Zeiss CMMs equipped with the RDS articulating probe holder and is suited for applications where maximum accuracy and flexibility are key.

As a replacement for trigger sensors, VAST XXT offers better measurement reliability and accuracy. It adds scanning functionality to the measurement spectrum and provides more information about the shape of features. VAST XXT also increases the operating safety and accuracy of measurements.

"Cardanic kinematics" and digital control

The VAST XXT utilizes what is known as "Cardanic kinematics". This was only possible by integrating complex calibration techniques for real-time operation into intelligent control technology, i.e. the MCC 800 "Scanning Engine". Complex kinematics can now be controlled and corrected. A new, BUS-based type of digital data transfer makes the complex wiring of measuring machines unnecessary.

The MCC 800 control permits the VAST XXT to be used not only with new coordinate measuring machines, but also on machines that previously could only be equipped with touch-trigger probes. A synchronization technique (patent pending) correlates the machine coordinates reliably and correctly. This improves the system's immunity to interference compared to the standard analog signal transfer.

Cardanic kinematics also combines minimum dimensions and weights with deflection paths that are almost identical to those of "large" scanning probes. The center of gravity of the moving system is positioned to keep the effects of the articulating RDS to a minimum and to avoid significant restrictions of the deflection path. The benefits include most effective collision protection and very low measuring forces.

In combination with the RDS which offers angle positions of 2.5° increments, VAST XXT offers two different modules with stylus lengths between 50 and 250 mm. Compared to other systems that offer 7.5° increments, Carl Zeiss offers a highly flexible system.

The Carl Zeiss Group offers products and services for the three strategic growth areas of biosciences and health care, consumer goods and systems solutions for industrial markets. The group is structured as six business units that operate with sole responsibility and are generally ranked first or second in their markets. The company is represented in more than 30 countries and operates production facilities in Europe, North America, Mexico and Asia. In fiscal year 2002/2003 the global workforce of approximately 14,150 employees generated revenue of 2.029 billion euros. Further information is available at www.zeiss.com.
