SCHAUMBURG, IL-November 8, 2005-TAIYO YUDEN (U.S.A.), INC.'s new CKP3216 series of 1206 case size multilayer chip inductors offer the industry's lowest profile for DC-DC converter choke coil applications in portable electronic device power circuits. With a maximum height of 0.9mm, CKP3216 series devices provide a lower profile than typical surrounding ICs, thus facilitating the design of thinner, higher-performance, multifunction cell phones, digital still cameras, digital video cameras and other battery-powered ultra-portable electronic equipment. Offering current ratings from 0.7 to 1.1A and 4.7 to 1.0µH, respectively (see table), low-profile CKP3216 series chip inductors are now available in mass production quantities in the following part numbers:

Smaller, thinner, multifunction device technology continues to drive the battery-powered portable market, in which hard-disk drives, voice recorders, larger color LCD screens, and other advanced features now require smaller, thinner choke coils and multiple DC-DC converters. A proprietary new internal-electrode printing process enabled TAIYO YUDEN to double the thickness of the internal conductor compared to the company's previous-generation devices, resulting in lower DC resistance (RDC). Another material science-derived improvement was the prevention of inductance drop during the application of high current, an essential requirement in ultra-portable applications. New additions to the CKP3216 series, now under development, are expected to result in further performance gains in 1206 case size.
