CFD Software works with CAD models.

Press Release Summary:

Enhancements to Gridgen v14 computational fluid dynamics meshing software include Glyph Tcl-based scripting language and ability to import geometry data from native CAD file formats such as CATIA and Pro/Engineer. Using Glyph, engineers can create customized meshing applications and utilities, reducing effort required to perform CFD analysis. Software also supports triangular faceted geometry models in stereo lithography and other formats.

Original Press Release:

Pointwise Releases Gridgen Version 14

Fort Worth. TX, May 20, 2002 - Pointwise. Inc. today began shipping to customers worldwide Gridgen Version 14. the latest release of its flagship computational fluid dynamics (CFD) meshing software product.

The cornerstone feature of Gridgen Version 14 is Glyph, a new Tcl-based scripting language. Using Glyph, engineers can create customized meshing applications and utilities significantly reducing the effort required to perform CFD analysis. Glyph was very popular with Gridgen V14 beta testers. One beta tester used Glyph to couple Gridgen with a CFD code and an optimization package. In less than a day he was able to study over 70 ship stabilizing fin designs and find the design minimizing cavitation and drag. Other engineers developed complete, standalone meshers like the system for modeling gas turbines.

Gridgen Version 14 also features Native CAD Import, the ability to import geometry data from native CAD file formats such as CATIA and Pro/ENGINEER, bypassing the step of translating to neutral files like IGES and without using a CAD license. "Native CAD Import eliminates one source of geometry translation errors", said John Steinbrenner, Pointwise's Vice President of Research and Development. "It also removes one step, exporting the neutral file, from the analysis process." Gridgen's Native CAD Import was developed using Spatial Corp.'s ACIS Exchange technology. ACIS SAT and STEP AP203 file import are also supported.

The other major new feature in Gridgen Version 14 is support of triangular faceted geometry models in stereo lithography and other formats. This lets users more easily manipulate and put grids on complex CAD models and use legacy data as the starting point for new models. In addition Gridgen Version 14 includes:

- topology simplification through automatic joining and
decimation of surfaces meshes

- baffles (faces internal to a volume mesh)

- a mirror transformation

- several new grid diagnostic functions

- integration of the grid quality examination command with the
elliptic PDE methods for structured grids

- export filters for the CFD++. CRUNCH, and NCC CFD solvers

Pointwise. Inc. is solving the top problem facing engineering analysts today: mesh generation for CFD. Large manufacturing firms and research organizations worldwide use Pointwise's Gridgen software and services to create the "digital geometry" that enables computer simulation of a product's performance in a fluid environment.
