PerkinElmer Optoelectronics Launches New CCD Camera for Biotechnology Instrumentation

Off-The-Shelf, Multi-Purpose Camera Provides Easy To Integrate, Affordable OEM Solutions for Life Sciences Applications

Fremont, Calif. - September 27, 2004- PerkinElmer Optoelectronics, a global technology leader providing market-driven integrated solutions for biomedical and industrial applications, today announced a new CCD camera with high image quality, standard interfaces and multi-purpose functionality that meets a variety of OEM biotechnology applications. PerkinElmer's new MultiBlue(TM) Biotech CCD camera, with its plug-and-play USB 2.0 interface, joins the ColdBlue(TM) Cooled CCD camera in the growing PerkinElmer family of high-performance yet cost-effective camera solutions for biotech manufacturers.

"PerkinElmer has more than 30 years of experience in the design and manufacture of high-speed, high-sensitivity cameras for industrial and biotech applications. In fact, PerkinElmer has built more than 10,000 biotech cooled cameras in the last ten years alone," said John Murphy, president, PerkinElmer Optoelectronics. "This expertise makes PerkinElmer the 'quiet giant' of CCD solutions and a uniquely qualified supplier to manufacturers of high-volume biotech instrumentation."

PerkinElmer's new MultiBlue Biotech CCD camera was developed with input from major OEMs of biotech equipment. It is designed for instruments used in a variety of life sciences applications including gene research and therapy, genomic / proteomic sequencing and expression, gel documentation and drug discovery.

MultiBlue offers a broad set of technical features designed to meet the diverse needs of biotech engineers, eliminating the cost and hassle of specialized cameras for different applications. It is equipped with a plug-and-play USB 2.0 interface, allowing users to be up and running in less than 30 minutes. This ease of integration combines with multi-purpose functionality to lower the cost of ownership of the MultiBlue camera.

During the design phase, PerkinElmer paid special attention to circuit design and thermal handling within the MultiBlue camera, thereby eliminating the need for an expensive, power-consuming cooling mechanism. This gives the 12-bit camera excellent signal quality with a 66 dB noise performance.

Additionally, the high quantum efficiency of the camera benefits users by converting a higher percentage of light (or signal), making small changes from picture to picture more noticeable and yielding a more precise, accurate image of the target.

With a video rate of five frames per second (typical of cameras with USB interfaces), MultiBlue is ideal for point-and-shoot imaging applications. For applications that require higher-speed imaging of up to 50 frames per second, PerkinElmer will offer an additional MultiBlue Biotech CCD camera with a FireWire (IEEE-1394b) interface later this year.
