Smurfit-Stone Container Corporation Introduces New META KD-8(TM) Automated Packaging Systems

LAS VEGAS, Oct. 15 /-- Smurfit-Stone Container Corporation's Automated Packaging Systems Group is introducing the new META KD-8(TM) case erector corrugated packaging system this week at the Pack Expo at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

The revolutionary new META KD-8(TM) (patent pending) system is reshaping the corrugated packaging industry. Existing systems are designed to erect META(R) cases by forming and gluing a die-cut blank around a fixed mandrel. The new META KD-8(TM) system is designed to erect an eight-sided META(R) case, offering material reduction and efficiency, increased stacking strength, enhanced graphic and display capabilities, and stronger shelf impact.

"A regular case is four sides, ours is eight," said Ricki Anderson, director of sales for Smurfit-Stone's Automated Packaging Systems Group. "There are a lot of container customers in the market that can use an eight-sided box for liquids and granular materials. Anything that's not perfectly square can use an eight-sided box."

Marketed for case-up or monthly lease, the META KD-8(TM) system features:
-- A large capacity magazine, capable of handling up to 150 cases, eliminating the need for a full-time operator.
-- A unique case selection system, enabling the machine to handle warped board and corrugated variations.
-- Opposing vacuum cups to slowly separate cases as they are erected, effectively breaking score lines and over-glued manufacturer's joints.
-- Hand cranks for fast, easy changeover without tools.
-- Vacuum transducers, rather than pumps, to reduce clogs and downtime.
-- A program logic controlled (PLC) timing sequence.

The eight-sided boxes produced by the META KD-8(TM) system are not only unique in the marketplace, the case require less square footage than RSV high compression and are therefore cheaper to produce.

"Container customers can start running the META KD-8(TM) system and saving on boxes immediately," Anderson said.
