NI Expands CAN Hardware Series to Include Transceiver-Selectable Board

SJA1000 Features, PCMCIA Synchronization Increase Efficiency in Automotive, Machine Control Industries

NEWS RELEASE -- Oct. 21, 2003 -- National Instruments expands its family of CAN hardware to include the NI PXI-8464 Software-Selectable interface for multiple transceiver access and the NI PXI-8463 Single-Wire CAN interface. To increase efficiency of automotive design and test and machine control, enhancements to the entire CAN line include the addition of the SJA1000 CAN controller and synchronization capabilities to the PCMCIA-CAN card.

The PXI-8464 Software-Selectable interface is a universal CAN board that communicates to high-speed, low-speed/fault-tolerant and single-wire networks through a single port. With this capability, engineers can use a single interface for several types of tests, which decreases development costs and speeds time to market. In addition to the universal interface, NI now offers connectivity to single-wire CAN networks through the PXI-8463 Single-Wire CAN board.

Additionally, all NI CAN hardware now includes expanded synchronization, increased functionality and improved performance. The PCMCIA-CAN card now shares timing and triggering signals, which makes the entire family capable of CAN/data acquisition (DAQ) synchronization for CAN device validation and data logging. Furthermore, with the addition of the Philips SJA1000 CAN controller and new physical layers, enhancements to the NI CAN line support functions such as sleep mode, wake-up mode, listen-only mode and echo mode. The NI CAN line also improves CAN bus performance by receiving up to 100 percent busload at up to 1 Mb/s.

NI CAN interfaces ship with NI-CAN 2.1, the new driver software, which includes configuration tools that provide access to Vector database files so engineers can easily convert raw CAN data to engineering units. NI-CAN 2.1 integrates seamlessly with NI LabVIEW 7 Express with an easy-to-use application programming interface (API), bus monitor utility and more than 40 example programs.
